View Full Version : Issues with Editing a HDTV capture

Hello everyone I've been searching long and far to figure out what can cause this issue but I've had 0 luck. Let me explain it to you the best I can...
I have a motorola box to firewire port capture setup
I use capdvhs to capture my streams and I have saved them in .ts and .mpg
I can view the .ts and .mpg without any issues at all (video is choppy but thats expected from a HD capture)
now the problems
it seems to be no matter what program I use to edit the commercials out the saved file is completely corrupted to the point that it's un-viewable and completely a waste.
1. load .TS file (3 gig show that is 32 mins long) into projectx to demux then put it into Mpg2Cut2 to cut (for example..)
2. the file loads up fine and I start to edit the commercials out
3. I save the cuts to a file and begin the process
4. the output is usually a 11hour 20min 23 second file that is 4.89 gigs and completely corrupt
5. I try to save the file with just a single commercial edited out and end up with the same issue just slightly different file size and duration.
I'm completely lost in this problem at first I thought it was just a bad capture due to the cable service blocking it etc etc. but I've tried it on various recordings I've done from various channels and have gotten the same output.
FYI: I have ffdshow h.264 encoding disabled, I have ffdshow, I have no "codec packs" installed, I have xvid, divx, h264 and another one that escapes my memory at this point in time. I've tried every program from Video Redo to Ts doctor to HDTV2DVD to H264 splitter and back to xvid4psp all give me the same corrupt file no matter which show I cap.

I'm not really sure if those 2 programs you used (ProjectX and Mpeg2cut) can work HDTV files, unless they are MPEG-2 (they are H.264 in Europe).

correct me if I'm wrong but isnt mpeg-2 the same file that capdvhs puts out if you put the file extention as mpeg? Also what programs would you use to edit hdtv? These are H.264 files over in the USA also

Hi DeeSeven,
Did you try TSPE (http://www.bitstreamtools.com)?
You should be able to find out what is going on with your stream and edit your commercials out whatever is inside. You'll need to use a .TS though as .mpg program streams are not supported.
Let me know if you have any probs.

Vent

Hmm, tried the VideoReDo TVS h.264 trial which handles both mpeg2 and h.264 ? It has a "quickstreamfix" mode to parse and fix errors. I've used that successfully for years on captures including mpeg2 HD. Also, what about neuron2's new DGAVCindex which apparently parses these things ?

Hi DeeSeven,
What version of TSPE were you using? And is that log you pasted edited? (it should tell you the version on the first line of the log).

Vent.

Hrrrm, sorry for TSPE not working as it should - now I want your sample file so I can figure out why you got that error!
Can you try 0.760 and see if you get the same result?
If it's more appropriate we can continue the discussion in the TSPE thread or in PM or via email.
I definitely want to try and fix the error so you can edit and TSPE can be better.
Thanks,
Vent

The freshly printed German magazine c't ( THE reference in the field), 3/2010, quoted DVR Studio HD as being the only software that reliably cuts every HDTV file. Competitors: ts doctor, tspe, tsmuxer, h264ts_cutter, ts sniper, tsremux.
I personally use ts doctor, as I need to keep all the streams (subtitles).

What about DGIndex / DGAVCIndex for H.264? I've never had issues with non pathological content!

thanks for the tip blue..I ran my .ts through dgavcindex and I got an error of
"Found nalu type 0, len 5 undefined, ignore Nalu moving on
hit yes to continue notifying this specific error type, hit no to disable it hit cancel to suppress all further notices"
upon hitting yes I get
"data partitioning not implemented
hit yes...yadda yadda yadda"
upon hitting yes I get
"found data partition 8 without matching dp A, discarding"
upon hitting yes
"found data partition C without matching dp A, discarding"
upon hitting yes
"sps_id out of range"
upon hitting yes
"Found nalu type 0, len 5 undefined, ignore Nalu moving on
hit yes to continue notifying this specific error type, hit no to disable it hit cancel to suppress all further notices"
upon hitting yes
"tying to use an invalid (uninitialized) picture parameter set with ID2, expect the unexpected "
this goes on for quite some time..so I hit cancel and I'm immediately hit with
"dsavcindex has stopped working"
who would have thought capping HD was such a pain lol
