Should GUIs support MakeMKV or AnyDVD HD?

Which decrypter should GUIs support? If somebody has experience with both please share. Currently I favor MakeMKV because it's still free and somebody said it won't be expensive in the future. MKV is a great container. I think MakeMKV is faster than AnyDVD combined with eac3to but I'm not sure about this. MakeMKV is easier to integrate in a GUI as it outputs single files. Using AnyDVD would require to handle seamless branching which a GUI need a external tool like Greif's eac3to GUI which would lack integration then or build a own eac3to frontend which costs probably more time than handle MKV outputed by MakeMKV and MKV handling must be supported anyway because it's the most important container in the encoding community. Since I have hardly experience with any of both I wonder if there are any gotchas with MakeMKV in regard of the structure of Blu-ray discs, branching, gaps etc., are there issues with players, decoders, convertors etc.

I have no experience with MakeMKV, but one major advantage AnyDVD HD has, which, i suspect, MakeMKV lacks is that AnyDVD is able to remove protections while ripping. It's hard to find any DVD/Blu-Ray without any protection these days, so I guess most people will have no choice but to go with AnyDVD HD. Or perhaps I'm wrong ?

Decrypting is the main task of MakeMKV, the advantage I see for AnyDVD is in combination with eac3to I suspect ripping and converting to other audio formats can be done in one step.

proper Blu-ray support = user will have .m2ts files on his drive he might want to convert
i mostly make full backups of my Blu-ray discs either to disc or image anydvd-hd rips the complete full structure of the Blu-ray disc stripping the protections for me to do what i like with
you do not want to limit the support you either support the Blu-ray standard .m2ts or you dont;)

Full rips take more time and disc space, ideally the user should be able to use both but features can only be added one by one so decisions have to be made.

It comes down to where you want to aim StaxRip ...

If you are going for the mainstream market of "i just want one app to convert this DVD/BD to <insert format here>", then I can see the merit of integrating decrypting ...

I think it's widely accepted that to get decent conversion, you must rip a disc to HDD first, then convert it ... so I think integration decryption into an encoder is probably a waste of time (I could be wrong of course!) ...

I guess StaxRip already does the already decrypted formats properly?!?

AnyDVD-HD will always have the decryption edge over MakeMKV, so as long as the purists still have the choice of decryption (and who knows, something better may come along), but the novice can insert a disc and have it work 90% of the time, I don't really see the downside (and in which case, go for the easiest to integrate) ...

Decrypting applications won't be integrated for legal reasons, just working with decrypted files like MakeMKV or AnyDVD output.

AFAIK AnyDVD HD actually allows to directly access the file on the disc. No need to rip it to the HDD at all. In case of seemless branching (i.e. movie split into several .m2ts) the free Clown_BD helps. On the downside is of course the cost of AnyDVD.

Just a side note, MakeMKV can provide similar functionality as AnyDVD!!! Yes, it works in linux too ;)

You specifically say you have no "experience" with MakeMKV - and your speculation about what MakeMKV can or cannot do makes it abundantly clear that you also have no knowledge whatsoever as to what MakeMKV does. And then, to compound this affront to the author and users of MakeMKV, you come to a totally unbased conclusion that "most people will have no choice but to go with AnyDVD HD."

With "one click", MakeMKV will both remove all protection from both DVD and BluRay files and convert them to .MKVs.

We're all free to choose which programs we use, as well as express our opinions about them regarding abilities, quality, and value but, to "build and present a house of cards" in a post, based on no knowledge of a program, is at best unwittingly misleading...

Then why not just pipe .TS, .MTS, .M2TS, .EVO and .WMV files into "H264TSto" ... it takes these files and dumps them into MKV (requires Haali and MKVToolnix, but I assume you already have to bundle these!) ...

That way you can concentrate on MKV input and not worry about how it got there ...

I frequently use .MTS files from camcorders and digicams and "H264TSto" has been instrumental in getting them into easier to manipulate formats!

At least that way you won't have to worry about MakeMKV vs AnyDVD (when your GUI detects a M2TS/MTS/TS file, just run it thru H264TSto and pick it up as a MKV) ...

LOL, really?!? So I can use a CLI to dump AVCHD/AC3 - MTS into AVCHD/AC3 - MKV in EAC3to?!? I keep reading that EAC3to doesn't do audio into MKV (Can mux H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2 video streams (video only, no audio) to MKV containerfrom EAC3to wiki ....)

So if Stax can convert M2TS to MKV with current tools, what's the real concern of AnyDVD vs MakeMKV?!?
