AviSynth for audio?

AviSynth and it's many filters are great for improving bad video footage. I was wondering if there's something similar for audio?

You know, something open source or free that can run a series of filters to make a crappy audiotrack or recording much more pleasant to listen to?

Maybe I'm wrong but I always thought of Audacity as an audio editor, not an audio processor.

sox perhaps. Audacity does have many filters though
