SlingCatcher and DVD Ripping Problems

Hey all,

I've been at this for about 2 weeks and have a ton of freeware and trial software installed on my computer trying to get this to work. Name the program and I probably have it installed already.

Anyway, my brother got me a SlingCatcher for Christmas so now I'm in the process of learning how to rip a dvd to my harddrive that will get it to work with the SlingCatcher.

My biggest problem is finding a ripping software that will extract the hardcoded subtitles with the video (in movies like Taken or District9 where subtitles will appear in the movie during certain scenes). I've found a few that will extract the movie and get it to work the the SlingCatcher, but none that will simply get the hardcoded subtitles as well.

The size of the outputted file is unimportant to me, but it must be one file (I would prefer to not have to merge files). I want the best quality I can get with the hardcoded subtitles. I'm using Windows Vista and the outputted file has to be in .WMV, .MPEG, H264 or a few other formats that I can't think of off of the top of my head.

You're undoubtedly causing confusion by using the wrong description. The subtitles of the type you referred to (e.g. those in "District 9") are FORCED subtitles, not hardcoded (BURNED as part of the video image)

Some DVD have tricky structure, recently I did one where VSRip failed no matter what. Only way to get subtitles synced for this DVD was using good old ProjectX. What I try to say is it needs some experience especially dealing with tricky structures, regarding subtitles I don't have great experience or knowledge either. I'm using free DVDfab, PgcDemux to extract VOB ID or PGC depending on structure and use VSRip to demux subtitles and ProjectX when VSRip fails. VSRip has a option to demux forced subtitles only.

I hate to make things still more complicated for you, but not all such "limited" subtitles are actually "forced". (Unless I've got this backwards) True "forced" subtitles are actually part of a complete subtitle stream, in which they are identified with a "flag". Other "limited" subtitles are actually a separate (smaller) subtitle stream.

True forced subtitles can be identified by loading your ripped DVD into DVDSubEdit and setting it to show ONLY "forced" subtitles.

Other "limited" subtitles (not forced) can be identified by using either good ol' DVD Decrypter or even older SmartRipper in "Stream mode".
