Is there any consensus yet on the range of available GUI conversion programs, MPEG2 to DivX or Xvid, on Windows 7 64bit operating systems?
Looking for a simple program for a computer challenged friend who has Windows 7 64 bit.

AutoGK works most of the time but falls over on some PAL DVBT files even after using ProjectX et al. The PVR in question stores the files in MPEG2 TS format on a 500GB drive but one can transfer out, convert to avi and transfer back to the hard disk to free up storage space. Note: there are no recording restrictions or macrovision in use in Australia on digital TV currently - what the future holds?

AutoGK would just use DGMPGDEC like most other GUIs, I've never seen issues with DGMPGDEC or ProjectX recording with DVB Viewer MPG or TS. Recently I did't even use ProjectX but just DGMPGDEC and it worked like a charm. StaxRip would allow to use DGMPGDEC, DirectShowSource, ffms2 or any other decoder working with AviSynth, same is true for MeGUI, StaxRip has much better DVB support though. Unless your streams aren't seriously broken you should be able to find a working splitter/decoder.

You might give Avidemux a try.

http://www.avidemux.org/

It is good editor and should work to convert between MPEG2 TS to Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP). You can also use scripting and it has some pre-set script to create DVD or PSP compliant files etc.

I use Avidemux on my Win XP x64 bit system, so it should work the same on a Win 7 64 bit system.

I have to use ProjectX routinely as it is the ONLY program so far that can extract the subtitle track from Australian DVB transmissions. Subs are text based and located at page 801. Audio is either MPEG or AC3 quite apart from it's ability in demux mode to clean up a lot of transmission errors.
