View Full Version : Unexotic Deinterlacing at reasonable speeds

Okay, so I tried doing a search for what everyone's favorite standard deinterlacer is, but I'm only really finding threads for especially unusual or problematic material, or I'm finding guides that are several years old and are recommending stuff like TomsMoComp, which I understand is way outdated.

So what am I trying to do? Just some simple 60i->30p concert video stuff (all pure interlaced). I've been using Yadif(mode=0) and I'm reasonably happy with the PQ and very happy with the speed. I understand that in terms of pure SSIM and PSNR ratings, nothing can touch McBob, but I also read how folks with quad-cores are only getting 2-3 fps with it, which prices my Athlon64 (running at 32 bit) right out.

So, can anyone tell me if there's a reason I shouldn't be using Yadif, or if there's anything they prefer that runs at similar speeds (or at least something not bone-crushingly slow)? Basically, I'm looking to retain as much vertical resolution in static areas while minimizing artifacts in moving areas (hey, who isn't?).

YADIF is a great, high speed deinterlacer. You can also try vanilla TDeint, which is quite good as well (though it can suffer from artifacts in high motion areas without help from TMM).

IIRC Yadif is the only deinterlacer that provides a decent balance between smoothness and detail under all circumstances.

It depends on the content.

In my experience, "vanilla" yadif consistently fails on anything with lines (you get "marching ants" or buzzing lines) e.g. fields lines in sports games like football, or tennis match, guitar strings, etc...

But no software filter comes close to the speed/quality. You could try DGNVTools if you have a compatible card & license, and use Nvidia purevideo deinterlacer, and offload the deinterlacing to the graphics card.

Indeed that is another excellent option, since it's real-time and free (in terms of CPU cycles), provided you don't mind kicking $15 over to neuron2, and have a CUDA capable GPU!

It's also a lot better than YADIF, IMO!! :)

PureVideo really isn't that great on my 2006 Geforce 6150 LE with rather recent drivers. There is residual combing.
Then again, it's a weak card.

Thanks guys. I guess I'm sticking with Yadif, as all my video cards are ATI. You can install a secondary Nvidia card and use it just for the decoding. I have two users successfully doing that. If you have WinXP, there is a little gotcha but not a showstopper: You either need to have a monitor connected to the secondary card, or you have to make a little dummy connector that tricks the card into thinking a monitor is attached. There are instructions on the web for that.

Interesting! My main desktop at home has a Radeon 4830, and I've always wanted to have your CUDA tools at home (I use them at work and love them). I may have to go buy a cheap-o 8500gt or something equally puny for these purposes!
