Vista/Win7 accessing HDD while I capture...

OK this is a bit annoying. Occasionally I drop frames while capturing because Vista/Win7 (both do it) appear to be accessing my drives - in this case, a four disk RAID-0 array based on Samsung 1TB F1 drives.

Is it some kind of indexing thing that I can stop?

The exact same set-up with Windows XP x86 causes no issues whatsoever.

There is an indexing thing you can turn off (just uncheck it in the properties page of the drive). It isn't supposed to run if you are using the drive though so it might be something else.

Hmm... I would expect automatic defragging, superfetch, windows defender, etc to do this kind of thing, but immediately relinquish control when something demanding lots of streaming IO like capturing video is happening!

I'd try turning them all off one at a time until you figure out what fixes it.

Don't turn superfetch off, just set it to 2 in the registry. Turning superfetch service off will most likely harm performance as it will also turn off standard prefetch as well!

Superfetch set to 2 will enable it for boot only (1 is application only).

Superfetch is a known pain when it comes to a changing memory use environment. Its principle is sound only when memory changing is limited. Applications will still be cached, but not continuously loaded as is the case with superfetch.
