I used to use fairuse and really rated it. It never seemed to get finished though, then divx4 came out which using 2 pass gives better results than fairuse, but then p2p came along so you don't even need to encode anymore at all :)

Is fairuse development dead?

The main thing I'd like is a program that automatically did all those front end auto things fairuse did + 2 pass divx4. A front end screen where you supply the final size + the data rate for the audio and an OK button would be fine. If you wanna fine tune things then you can use nandub, for most though this'd be great. AT least then the muppets who encode for p2p might be able to produce something half decent, some of them are deadfull (looks like divx3-fast motion+flask = yuk!!!)

any auto-divx tools in the pipeline ?

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to this forum anymore because Fair Use seems to have pretty much stopped being developed. Last I heard, FU2K was thinking about making Fair Use open source because he just doesn't have enough time to fool with it anymore. Even though I think he has done a great job on FU so far, I think its time to make it open source so people aren't waiting 6+ months for new releases.

making it open source doesn't garuntee a release in less than 6 months, and unless someone really talented like FU2K takes on the bulk of the upgrading, the new versions won't be nearly as exciting as those FU2K made. We can only wait and see what happens.

BTW, I don't mind waiting 6 months if there will be a visible improvement! As I stated in the above thread, most of the open source programs are doomed to fail when the original author stops developing. Only M2A and it seems now, DVD2AVI had/have a chance of improving.

I highly doubt that anyone of the programmers has the same pilosophy like fu2k, the KISS principle isn't often seen in the DVD backup scene.

Like I said, I'd rather wait and have a stable (it's still BETA, remember) and bugfixed version than open source.

And for a FairUse Divx4 version... For what? You have GordianKnot and such. If fu2k goes with FairUse to 1.x that would be more than enough (as he is working for YEARS on this project!).

Whatever he makes of it, I would like to thank him for the most exciting software since a loong time (IMO, only Nandub (wich has a completly different approach) plays in the same league).

So, fu2k, good luck and enjoy the programming...

Cheers,

Mijo.

I don't know about that. Any programmer who has ever worked with a mac long enough to see how elegant the interface is probably has a similer programing/interface philosophy.

Well, just take a look at the available programs and their UI.

IMO, only very few are so easy to use like FU. More options = harder to use. Less option = easier to make a good UI, but the danger to oversimplify is there. For instance, it is VERY (if not impossible) hard to make an KISS UI for Nandub...

To see what approach the programmer has, only take a look at his program :) .

Ookie.

I think FU2K should release the source just to show this guy up

:D Hehehe... Feel free to disagree, but I stand by my thoughts.

And, BTW, fu2k will do what he want and our discussion here is probably of no consequence.

Cheers,

Ookie.

Did I miss the point? Ookami seems to be talking about interface design and Overlord seems to be talking about coding style. The easiest, most intuitive interface can be backed by a complete bastard of a program; and the ugliest, most revolting program you have ever seen could be written with code that's a joy and delight to read and debug.

I agree that FairUse retains the popularity it has largely because of its interface. If the newer programs (using a newer codec) used the same approach, I would switch immediately.

I used FlaskMPEG for my intial attempts at DVD backup. When I found FairUse, it was like discovering the promised land. Instead of running this, looking there, setting that, etc..., FairUse does everything (oh my god) automatically.

I would love to see FairUse updated to implement the recent codec improvements, but I honestly will most likely keep using it even if it doesn't. I just don't have the patience to use any other software available.
