cce luminance setting?

I've been using robshots guide, and maybe it's just me, but it seems that all the videos i've done seem a little dark. I've checked the 0-255 luminance setting, but was wondering about the default 16-235. How does this effect the video? Does this lighten it up? Which one is best, or when do you know when to use which?

0-255 is PC scale.

16-255 is television scale.

Selecting the wrong one for the wrong environment leads to colors that don't quite look right.

If you're playing on a standalone, choose 16-255, if you're playing mainly on a PC, select 0-255.

It actually has to do with the incoming signal, as opposed to where it's going to be played back.

Works like this:

Digital video is encoded from 0 to 255, with pure black being 0, and pure white being 255

When analog video is captured, the video is actually 7.5 to 100 IRE on the waveform monitor. When this is translated to digital, you get the 16-235 scale (you can go superblack in analog, and also past the white point, usually to around 110 or 115 IRE).

So, if you are encoding material that _originates_ on a digital format, such as DV, D8, or any of the professional digital formats, you want to use the 0-255 scale.

If the signal originated on analog systems, then you should use the 16-235 scale to accurately reproduce the brightness/contrast range.

For what it's worth, when doing my own encodes, I always use the 0-255 scale, and manually adjust my levels and gamma in virtualdub or AVISynth to achieve the proper range. Easier than guessing what the 16-235 scale will translate to when played back on an NTSC monitor.

guess i'm still confused about all of this. All I want to do is rip dvd, process with dvd2avi, frameserve with avapi, and reencode with cce. I don't want any color conversions,adjustments. Is this not possible?

If your original source material is from a DVD, set the luminance value to 0-255.
