View Full Version : need help with ivtc and deinterlacing hybrid source

Hi,

I saw this documentary a while back on Discovery Channel in Europe.
It was an American-made documentary, which was (badly) converted to PAL for broadcasting, and it had awful blending and ghosting everywhere, so i didn't capture it, but decided to buy the ntsc dvd set in the US.

It's mostly telecined film, so i would like to ivtc the footage (and transcode it).
If it was NTSC, telecined throughout, this would be easy for me, but...occasionally, there are scenes which don't follow the 3-2 pattern and leave artefacts.

Stepping through them in virtualdub, i see some are progressive, others are pure interlaced, and some have strange patterns.

I was wondering about what would be a good way to deal with this situation. I figure it would probably be necessary to cut these few scenes out, treat them seperately, and then insert them again? Or are there other, easier ways?

As i said, doing a straight forward inverse telecine to get a 23.976fps stream is easy enough, but i don't know what to do with these other scenes.

Because there are not too much of these, i think it's maybe worthwhile to spend some time and effort on it.

So i'd really appreciate it if someone more knowledgeable could take a look at some samples and maybe give me some help on how to tackle this.

You can use TIVTC with hybrid treatment/blend decimation or use TFM and TDecimate to make a VFR encode.

The first 2 are the same, converted from PAL by idiots. Every 6th frame is a duplicate and the fields are interlaced. You could remove the dupe frames but nothing can remove the interlacing. You may as well leave it at 29.97fps. Or use Decomb's or TIVTC hybrid treatment if you decide to make the whole thing 23.976fps. It won't look much worse than it already does.

The third one is standard NTSC interlaced video. Leave it alone if doing it separately from the rest, or use Decomb's or TIVTC hybrid treatment if you decide to make the whole thing progressive 23.976fps.

Thanks guys for your valued input.
I might give this VFR thing a try, but for now, i'm concentrating on getting the best overall result with just inverce telecining the thing.

Regarding the Gates Deposition clips: i already feared this would be beyond rescue, so i'll try not to let it bother me too much.

Now, regarding the purely interlaced parts like clip3: i already tried a tfm(order=-1).tdecimate(hybrid=1).
In the output stream, in the beginning of clip3, there's still combing, which disappears a few seconds later.

Does this mean i need to tweak additional parameters in tfm() or tdecimate(), to get rid of the residual combing?
I wouldn't know where to begin.
There are so many of them.

Edit: i'm reading the help for decomb right now and i'll need to experiment with this a little, especially the postprocessing part. Still, a few quick pointers are certainly welcome.

Edit3: it seems to me that the deinterlacing with TFM is better than with Telecide.
I see i can make it catch more combing with the ctresh parameter.

The major problem with this approach is the jerkiness that it introduces in interlaced parts, because of the decimating.
Also, what about the true progressive scenes? There are a few animated, progressive scenes here and there. Will this cause problems too, when doing inverse telecine and decimating?

I don't see the interlacing, but I'll take your word for it that it's there. You might try Vinverse after the IVTC. It's job is to clean up any residual interlacing. You can find it at the bottom of this page:

Well i guess i can just forget the whole ivtc thing because i just took a look at the second dvd and that's a complete hodgepodge of all sorts of crap.
That's that then.
Oh...and interlacing...sucks!
Hard.
These ancient pre-war ntsc and pal standards need to die too.
