video codecs

I recently purchased sony vegas, for each video I open with it, i get only audio and a black screen instead of video.

I started using g-spot, which gives me the codec I need, I just dont know where to get them or install them. I use windows vista, by the way.

I was hoping someone could give me a reliable source for both.
