View Full Version : How to make "nice" screenshots from Aero Glass windows? (PNG with transparency)

I'd like to make screenshots like those you see on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Windows_Update_Vista.png
Obviously Window's built-in screenshots capability doesn't do it. Also neither the Microsoft's own "Snapping Tool" nor "MWSnap" can achieve this.
I always get the background shining through the areas that (ideally) should be transparent. So what is the secret? If anybody knows, please enlighten me!
:thanks:

Maybe you can find some info here (http://www.sevenforums.com/software/15578-looking-screenshot-capture-application.html).

Thanks. FastStone Capture v5.3 is freeware and looks good, although it can't do "true" transparency :)

Have you tried Gadwin Printscreen freeware or the professional trial version, http://www.gadwin.com/download/ , I personally haven't tried to areo glass windows screenshots, but the screenshots I have taken include everything I see on the screen as I see it. Just an idea.

An individual developer with his own site was selling a tool that capture only the window rendered with Aero, but darned if I can find it. It took a shot of the whole window and rendered the Aero glass and drop shadows without any background.
Edit: Winsnap is what I was thinking of.

I doubt it can handle aero glass otherwise the project summary would mention it, did you actually try it?

Yes. ZScreen is great! It works even better than FastStone Capture :)
It doesn't let the original background shine through it it keeps the original shadow:
