View Full Version : Low bitrate mp3-->any particular setting?

First of all, no, i can't use AAC HEv2 because of lack of compatibility with most table dvd/dvx players.

I downsampled 3 ac3 448kbps 5.1 tracks where the most part is spoken (The godfather trilogy) to use the free space that remained on the dvd in order to add a second language audio to the rips I did.
In order to fit into the dvd9, some easy math leads to a bitrate of about 40kbps ABR 16khz for each one. The comparison with AAC is unfair, of course:devil:
I was wondering if there could be any particular LAME setting to optimize those mp3.

I'd drop your video bitrate a bit so you can get at least 128kbps :)

I wouldn't want to do this atm, but thanks anyway :)

What do you expect from 40kbps @ 16kHz ? It will always be crap, even the voices will sound bad (lack of high frequencies).
You shouldn't go below 64 kbps for an acceptable quality and also I'm not even sure that hardware players will accept 16 kHz, I think the minimum should be 22.05 kHz (needs confirmation though).

Seriously, what's the point of having a superb image with a crap audio ?

Please read carefully my first post.

Thanks for the 16khz thing anyway, I'll investigate into it.

I suggest you to use
lame3.98.2 -q0

and one of following
-V8.42 freq 32khz
-V8.84 freq 24khz
-V9.40 freq 22.5khz
-V9.73 freq 16khz

highest quality and lowest -V which gives satisfactory sample frequency

MPEG-1 layer III sample frequencies (kHz): 32 48 44.1
bitrates (kbps): 32 40 48 56 64 80 96 112 128 160 192 224 256 320

MPEG-2 layer III sample frequencies (kHz): 16 24 22.05
bitrates (kbps): 8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64 80 96 112 128 144 160

MPEG-2.5 layer III sample frequencies (kHz): 8 12 11.025
bitrates (kbps): 8 16 24 32 40 48 56 64

Thank you.
I'll let you know the results.

I was wondering if there could be any particular LAME setting to optimize those mp3.You can encode as mono, this will produce far better overall quality than stereo, but you loose stereo image. Aslo you can tray LC-AAC at those bitrates, it will produce much better quality than mp3.

That's a very good idea, actually!

I usually rip audio books to 56kbps mono MP3 at 22 KHz, and the quality is quite good. I imagine lowpassing further, and using mono will produce reasonable results at 40kbps.

I suggest you to use
lame3.98.2 -q0

-q0 is locked in 3.98.2 and do nothing.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/ is forum to ask and search around audio.

i'd use
lame --preset 40
(which should return an abr stream of some sort)

type
lame --preset help
for more info.
