Hi,
I'm using TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-W162Z drive with Nero v9.2.6.0.
I started to invest in some real expensive DVD-RW & DVD+RW media recently. (Mitsubishi, TDK, Verbatim, Sony & Imation)
I started to do some test burning and noticed that Nero doesn't change the Book Type setting for DVD-RW to DVD-ROM. DVD+RW is fine.
After a few full erase (about 3-5 times) the DVD-RW cant be read/access by my drive. (blinking light)
Personally I don't think it's a hardware problem but a software/registry problem cause the very first burning of the DVD-RW media is fine and now I've 3 DVD-RWs that can't be read by my drive.
I hope someone with real expertise can help me out...

Hi!I started to do some test burning and noticed that Nero doesn't change the Book Type setting for DVD-RW to DVD-ROM. DVD+RW is fine.Booktype can only be changed for "plus" (DVD+R, D/L DVD+R, DVD+RW) media...

I simply don't understand why people always tend to consider the software as angels&demons.
They buy the crapest gear and hope miracles from software (angels) or viceversa they blame it (demons) for hardware errors.
Summa summorum:
The difference between Nero and ImgBurn is not that the latter burns the DVDs with a better quality (PI/PO/TA/jitter), but it provides you a better compatibility and gives you less problems.
To me your case looks like a bad DVD-RW or a bad burner. It's all hardware related, as your Samsung wrote well (how well?) a new DVD-RW but had problems in rewritting it.
To pinpoint the exact cause you have to use a new DVD-RW of the same batch, burn it once, then check it with a diagnose/quality tester (kProbe2, PlexTools etc.). An out-of-specs freshly burned DVD-RW (especially jitter and TA, just ignore PI/PO if normal) is the sign that your burner has problems. If the jitter/TA are ok but Pi/PO are high then your burner is ok, but it's either the media or the burner (suboptimal strategy - firmware?), in other words the burner and the media do not match.
A DVD+-RW reaches its optimum performance only after the at least 3 burns.
Next time buy a Pioneer, LiteOn or a real Plextor.

Referring to this (http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-23328.html) thread, I've the same problem with Goldfinger_007 and jdobbs...
Do I really need a format before I do the first burning on DVD-+RW ?
Does full erase in Nero amount to format ?

It's a common problem with Pio DVR-103 and older firmwares.
Full erase is also a full format.

So does that mean I've to do a full erase for a new DVD-RW before the first burning ?

Don't know, it depends on your combination of drive + FW + software. Normally yes. For DVD+RW normally is no.

Another thing I want to clarify is the option of "Format Disc" and "Erase Disc" in InCD.
Are they any differences between InCD's "Erase Disc" and Nero Burning ROM's "Full-erase rewritable disc" ?

InCD is a packet-writing driver, nero is a disk-writing software. There's a difference in approach.
But you have to read the manuals or to do some tests yourself. There's an excellent info on the net, cdr faq, that explains everything.

IMGBurn will erase/format either media, it is free, and it is by far the superior burning software! It can even direct you to firmware updates for your burner.
You should at least give Ghitulescu suggestion a try, then judge for yourself. This is very well put.
