Converted file too big for Nero

I've converted many .avi files to DVD format using DVDFlick and then burning the disc with Nero 6. I recently converted a 682 MB .avi file to DVD which resulted in a 6.02 GB DVD file (VIDEO_TS folder). Why was the resultant file so big? I've had larger sized .avi files converted to smaller-sized DVD files.

1) Am I correct in presuming, based on the size, that this is a conversion of a commercial movie?

2) If so, what is the filesize of the movie on the original DVD?

3) Why didn't/don't you simply rip and compress, as "movie-only", the original DVD?

Doesn't the Nero6 software come with "Nero Vision", why not just use that for conversion and burning?!?

If not, there must be a setting in DVDFlick somewhere that you can chose DVD-5 or DVD-9 ...
