Does anyone know of a simple tool to permanently
change the default aspect ratio of a very short avi/divx file?
I tried MPEG4Modifier, but it was not compatible.

I am also after a freeware cropping tool that can remove vertical
left and right borders from similar videos without having
to re-convert in the process?

thanks for any info! :)

You could re-wrap in mkv with mkvmerge and set the AR flags

Not possible, you need to re-encode

thanks for the reply-not sure how to re-wrap with mkvmerge or set flags, will have to look it up ;)

I managed to change the aspect ratio of one avi in just a few seconds using MPEG4Modifier,
it didnt work for all files, but for the ones that did, I could see no quality loss.
The videos that do not work needed a div3 decompressor..?

I also tried VirtualDub using its filters to try and get the correct ratio for the videos that do not work,
but the output at the correct ratio came out huge the first time-thousands of mb! so im guessing this was
the default, non-compressed)? If I choose anything else however, its set to take a long time to finish, and
its probably not worth it if there is quality loss?..

Your vdub adventure wasn't set to direct stream copy, so you re-encoded the whole thing. Since you used no compression, it was uncompressed

For the div3, try a fourcc changer to change to divx or xvid, then mpeg4modifier again. If that doesn't work, mkvmerge should work

when using virtualdub and setting to direct stream copy for the video and its audio, I could still tell the program to give out a different ratio for the final output-but the outputted video would never change! It always remains identical to the original. If only full processing is possible in order to change screen ratios, Im not sure why the program will still let me edit these settings?

Ive now got Virtualdub set at full processing, and changed the output video to divx, as a test to see what the quality will be like! Ive tried a small test, and it seems to be working and giving a good quality output video, but its going to take well over an hour or ten to find out if its in synch and/or being worth it all along! quite a big difference from programs such as mpegmodifier that could do the same thing with different types of video files, altering the screen ratio of entire video files in just a few seconds in comparison! lol. thanks :)

Almost the same problem (although not with avi, but with mkv file), so I didn't want to create new topic for that.
I've tried to convert BD movie to mkv and after long hours of conversion found that I've set some settings in RipBot wrong (as I remember, I've left everything which is related to aspect ratio to "do not change" except automatical cropping), and all the programs I've tried (VLC, MPC, MPC HC) are showing distorted video. Source file was 1 920 x 1 080 pixels, display aspect ratio 16:9, same info MediaInfo shows about result file. With VLC when I set aspect ratio to 2.21:1 - then result is more close to what it should look like. I've tried reencode with mkvmerge GUI, set aspect ratio to 2.35 - and only VLC showed normal result after reencoding, MPC and MPC HC showed distorted video anyway.
Is it possible to fix this problem without complete reencoding of BD movie which takes days on my computer? Which tools should I use and what settings should I set? Thanks in advance...
