looking for a good mpeg2 encoder for ffv1 to dvd

i started a project to convert vhs to dvd. i got all the video encoded with ffv1 which i did with virtualdub. right now i need to encode these files to mpeg2 so i can write them to dvd.

i've used nero 7 ultra which allows for the creation of very nice custom menus. however, it's encoding doesn't yield very impressive results. i then tried dvd flick per recommendation of someone here and it pulls out some very nice quality video, but it isn't very customizable on the menu front and seems to want to letterbox my 4:3 video which i don't like.

if i could just find a good, stand-alone mpeg2 encoder then i could use nero. i've tried both tmpgenc and cce, but i have a hard time achieving the results i need (probably bcuz i don't understand all the advanced options).

so is there a best of both worlds here?

actually.. i just thought of something. i had dvd flick generate vob files. perhaps i should be able to use these for my nero project. and perhaps i just took this thread into off-topic land =\

edit: nevermind that... i forgot the video is letterboxed and i don't want it letterboxed. so my previous post is still outstanding

You can give a try to AVStoDVD and select 'Elementary Streams' as output. Then you can feed the m2v and ac3 to Nero.

If you do not want the letterbox effect, make sure that 'Edit Title'/'Video'/'Video Aspect Ratio' is 'Widescreen'.
