hi, is it simply a gui for mencoder or transcode (like dvd::rip) or does it use totally different sourcecode for ripping (meaning it doesnt depend on ffmpeg or mplayer...).
my friend mentioned it but i'm not quite sure if it produces better results than mencoder (xvidenc).

It's a combination of ffmpeg, a DVD processor (IVTC/deinterlace/similar), and an x264 frontend.

I doubt HB will produce better results if you encode with EXACT SAME SETTINGS, once in mencoder and once in HB... HB has some nice filters though, like the decomb one, which mencoder misses. The rest of the filters are ported over from mplayer,... pp7 deblocker, etc

HandBrake also has VFR support, working in combination with the IVTC filters. And fully functional MP4 output.
