how to rip and encode dvds with seamless branching?

Hi!

In my project of ripping all my dvds and blurays to harddrive (for one as a backup, and because Im to lazy to always insert the disks :)), I encountered a problem with Aliens and Alien³. I guess its because the extended editions of them are done via seamless branching. The problem is, that at some point, the ac3 track starts getting out of sync with the video.

I decrypted it using DVD Decrypter, and then encoded it using megui single click mode.

Any ideas please?

I ripped all the Alien DVDs (NTSC) a while ago. I just ripped them with DVD Decrypter in IFO mode and took the main movie PGC. Never had any trouble with audio desync or anything.

hmm, I also used ifo mode, but there are 2 titles shown, the second is longer by several minutes.


I just checked the vob files on the disk, and they seem to be ok... seems to be an encoding problem

A slightly longer title probably includes deleted scenes spliced in or something; generally, I just take the longer title and call it a day. One thing you might try is segmented, linked Matroska files to allow you to play the deleted scenes or skip them; otherwise, you can just mux the chapter list from the longer file and manually skip extra scenes on playback.

This is because of seamless branching, you are right. The use of seamless branching is for the localisation( translation) of on- screen visible text. Normally, only the audio track of films is translated into other languages, but when text central to the plot is visible on screen, the scene may not shot once for every language, and the DVD player can be instructed to select the appropriate version of the scene depending on the user's language preference. For this purpose a technique called multi-angle is used more often.
Using DVD Decrypter, you should use it in IFO Mode( Mode>>IFO, at the top), and get the movie with only the angle you want. Since the audio is AC3, you can also use DelayCut to do away with the delay. If audio is a second off the video, in DelayCut, set the deday for 1000ms(either+ or-, depending on the audio is before or after the video), either cut a second from the beginning of the audio, or add a second of silence to the beginning of the audio, then remix video with the fixed audio.

Still got problems with alien 3. If I use makemkv it creates a perfectly synchronised mkv, but 4.5 gb big. If I demux it, reencode the video to something smaller, and remux it, again, it gets asynchronous. The problem is, this is not linear. It starts at some point during the movie and seems to get bigger with time.
