Hi,

I am testing some "Movie Only" encodes (default quality) using BD-RB. I have 2 PC's, one Dual Core AMD on which a 2 Hour movie takes about 12 Hours to encode. I also have another old P4 PC on which a 2 Hour movie takes about a weekend to re-encode. I cant always use the AMD since I use it for other stuff as well as work. My question is if I use the old PC and just let it run (don't care how long it takes) will the re-encoded quality be the same as when I have encoded with the AMD? Also the PC's run at 100% CPU load, I suppose this will drastically reduce the life span of the PC. What is your thoughts on this?

Thanks.

The quality will be the same.

The effect on the CPU will be determined by the core temperature you reach. With proper stock cooling or better you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Thanks.

Does x264 development have plans to drastically reduce the encode time in the future or will it all depend on better and more CPU's?

You just need a faster PC... My Q9550 takes between 4.5 to 5.5 hours to make the same type copies you're making. Given the size difference and complexity of content between a Blu-Ray and a DVD, it seems pretty fast.

Understood.

Thanks for the responses.

Does x264 development have plans to drastically reduce the encode time in the future or will it all depend on better and more CPU's?While we have some pretty awesome assembly programmers, we don't have any actual sorcerers yet.

@Dark Shikari

Sorry if I have offended you with the question. Thanks for a great encoder and keep up the excellent work.

Thanks

Thanks.

Does x264 development have plans to drastically reduce the encode time in the future or will it all depend on better and more CPU's?A lot depends on the output media you select. When you write to BD-25 you don't need all the bells and whistles -- and the time drops dramatically. Blanks are selling for about $2.50 (a huge drop from a year ago) -- and you can expect them to drop more over the next year.
