New XviD 2-pass mode

I just added a new 2-pass mode so that you no longer need an external .stats editor - just set the mode to "2 Pass - 2nd Pass Int." and enter the desired file size in Kilobytes. It seemed to stick pretty well from my testing (it just does a linear curve mod).

There's no credits stuff or minimum bitrate or anything you get from an external editor. Just set it and pray.

Might take a day or so for the build to appear on the usual sites.

hmm.. are there any other differences to gknot than the min bitrate stuff? as you can read in my codec comparison I got pretty accurate results in the filesize department using gknot and I do not wish that to change ;)

Well.. I have no idea how GKnot's internals work :)

The old 2-pass mode is still there as "2 Pass - 2nd Pass Ext." for external tools to play with. All the new mode does is scale every frame by the same divider to reach the desired file size (same as Xiphrom I'm told).

The code isn't terribly modular, so if people want internal credits, smoothing or whatever else, it might be a while longer.

btw.. you said you can get it at the usual places.. I only know about umanic's place and he hasn't updated his builds for a week now.. is there any place better updated to go? requests for binaries are slowly coming in now...

Hmm Nic's site is a bit aged too now that I look at it.. I don't check binary sites all that often I must confess.

Not sure what the best stop-gap measure would be, the 02-01-20 build had a few issues.. I can attach a CVS build if you think it'd be worthwhile.

I'm encoding a movie right now and it seems that it is going to be undersized by about 50 mb. :(

I just encoded a movie with the 01/27 build and am absolutely impressed to say the least. Bearing in mind this code is still in development makes it that much more sweeter:)

I used the 2 pass mode along with Gknot and Vdub 1.48 and totally agree with Doom9's comparison article. When I compared my encoded XviD to my DivX3 flick I noticed the XviD appeared to hold better detail. Along with that, the macroblock artifacts were almost totally gone even though I encoded the flick at 759 bitrate. The movie (Frighteners) I encoded didn't have much action so I think I'll do one more test on Pitch Black:D IMO DivX4 never gave me a reason to stop using DivX3/SBC but XviD might just pry me away. Hope others will post results as well.

EDIT- Oh by the way! Size prediction?? Well my Xvid came out within 75K of the DivX3. Me likes lot:eek:

Just starting screwing around with Xvid and wanted to be sure about something. When discussing bitrates, either with the new built in two pass or when using GK, we are talking about 1kb=1000bits right? So we would use the same target bitrate as we would for DivX4?

Lately I've been doing all my stuff as either SBC or DivX4, depending on which looked better for a particular title. But I must say I'm impressed with my initial tests of Xvid (on trailers). I'll begin testing it on full encodes tonight.

If you set a bitrate in XviD, it's held that 1 kilobit = 1000 bits as per the MPEG4 spec. However that only affects 1-pass CBR encodes.

The 2-pass mode, where you set a desired file size, just works with standard kilobytes (1024 bytes). If you enter 573440, you'll hopefully get a 560 MB output file.
