View Full Version : 1080p mkv scrambled in MPC-HC

I just did a clean Win7 x64 install and installed K-Lite codec pack. I have one problem though. Using MPC-HC mvk 720p files plays fine using DVXA (Radeon HD5770). But 1080p files plays completely scrambled and unwatchable. If I open them in WMP they play fine.
Is there some setting I should check/change?
I have actually bought CoreAVC, but have not installed it since I am unsure if it offers any advantage over using DVXA?

K-Lite is unneeded for Windows 7. Especially when using a player like MPC-HC.
You can uninstall it (K-Lite) and then simply install Haali's Media Splitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/) and the current latest ffdshow build (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/SVN%20builds%20by%20clsid/generic%20builds/ffdshow_rev3119_20091027_clsid.exe/download).
Also, try the newest MPC-HC development build (avaiable at www.xvidvideo.ru (http://www.xvidvideo.ru)).
Make sure you install the most recent DirectX End-User Runtime (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en).
Now, if the internal H.264 DXVA decoder gives you trouble, you can simply disable it (Options->Internal Filters->Uncheck it). Then the Windows DXVA decoder will be used (unless you have other decoders on your system).
CoreAVC uses the GPU to decode H.264 only on Nvidia cards. Since you have an ATI one, you'll get software decoding. DXVA, on the other hand, should work well w/ your card (install the latest Catalyst driver!).

in my eyes the 32bit version of MPC-HC is much better because about 90% of all codecs are still 32bit(and cannot be loaded in 64bit version)

K-Lite is evil and never needed. Especially when using a player like MPC-HC.
Fixed that for you ;)

K-Lite is the best thing that happened to the world of video playback for both novice and expert users.
Fixed that for you ;)
People here might like looking for the stuff they need themselves and test various versions to find a stable one, but that is not something an average PC user is capable of doing. Plus you don't get nice options for thumbnail generation and stuff like that when you install individual codecs. That pack is much more advanced than you think. Don't speak evil about thing you know absolutely nothing about.
You are exhibiting the usual parrot behavior of people that think they are 1337.
Thinking that packs break things or install unneeded stuff is just a very short-sighted opinion. There are small packs as well, and they can easily be customized to fit your own specific needs.

There are small packs as well, and they can easily be customized to fit your own specific needs.Small? Doesn't break things? Easily customizable? I'm pretty sure you're talking about a different pack (http://www.cccp-project.net/) here. ;)

Parrot behavior? That's not very friendly, clsid! I think problems stemming from corpulent codec packs are well documented!
Also, last I checked, K-Lite included a bunch of things with questionable licenses.
I've just dealt with too many cases of DirectShow hell over the last 5 years or so, on machines that had K-Lite installed.
cccp is the only one I've tried recently, and it worked very well. Perhaps things have changed with K-Lite recently?
All I ever use is Haali splitter, ffdshow-tryouts, and ac3filter.

yep.. Extremely large. 40MBs... U need to buy a dedicated hard drive.. Breaks everything. So far for 3 years i havent able to get single error or get some other issue, but im sure the bugs are there hiding...waiting....
Avival k-lite is mpc +ffdshow+mastroska (the same thing you proposed) + codec for the less common files....
The author obviously doesnt have alot of knowledge about thease things, and thats excactly why he needs the k-lite
Toranga you problem is that you need the 32bit version too...

Toranga you problem is that you need the 32bit version too...
I only installed the normal 32 bit K-lite pack and not the 64 bit since it stated that the 64 bit pack should not be needed.

@ codecpack chatter:
Both CCCP and K-lite are are basically custom installers for MPC-HC, FFDshow and Haali splitter(this part is oversimplified, they do a lot more besides installing this).
their philosophy is slightly different.
CCCP only plays back stuff the team considers usefull and stable (mostly inspired by the anime scene)
CCCP also contains a bunch of patches applied to MPC-HC and FFdshow.
K-lite plays back everything the user is likely to encounter, but uses external codecs for those formats that are either unsupported or (partially) broken in FFdshow.
Although i am a k-lite user myself, i do not agree with either codecpack.
In my opinion:
1. both should be combined into a single official MPC-HC+FFdshow installer
2. Just like K-lite does now, you should be able to choose between regular(k-lite) and anime(cccp) oriented settings (at least untill the reason for the differences has been fixed)
3. The alternative codecs and splitters should be phased out by fixing the bugs in MPC-HC, FFdshow and Libavcodec
For more info on the MPC-HC roadmap look here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/mpc-hc/wiki/To-Do

Great idea. I really think that merging the development of ffdshow+mpc+codeck pack can creat a wonderful product...

@tetsuo55
K-Lite comes in different variants, each with a different philosophy, serving a different group of users.
Basic: Tiny pack for playing mainstream video files.
Standard: Small pack for playing mainstream video files. Includes MPC-HC. This is the recommended pack for the average joe.
Full: Medium sized pack for playing all kinds of audio and video files. This is the most popular variant.
Mega: Large pack that offers additional flexibility of components. For example a choice between the 'old' MPC and MPC-HC. This variant has a huge fanbase because of the content that it offers.
Fixing all known problems in MPC, ffdshow, and the splitters is a noble goal, but not something that can be done easily and on short notice. Plus, the competition isn't sitting still either. Haali is about to release a new version of his splitter suite, hopefully eradicating most known bugs.
@Blue_MiSfit
Lots has changed in the past 5 years. I suggest you try the latest version. Any constructive criticism is welcomed.

Yes i am aware of all these difference. The thing is, most of the reasons for you to offer alternative choices are not on the bug tracker :(

Casimir666 already has several sample files that do not work properly with MPC-HC or its internal filters.

But casimir is just one guy (and he focuses mostly on DXVA) items on the tracker can be fixed by anyone.

For a while Casimir was the only active developer. I prefer sending things directly to devs because that way I can get direct feedback in case additional information is needed.
I don't remember the details of every single MPC related problem that I have encountered over the years. I will try to add new stuff to the tracker whenever possible.

Maybe I'll give K-Lite another try - as long as there's competent folks working on it, the more the merrier!

Just a side note — maybe things have changed during the last couple of months, but the recent versions of the K-Lite Codec Packs could not be decompressed with UniExtract (a password was required). :(

@Mitzuki: Actually at least for 1.5 year, that's the case.

What's the point of protecting the installer?

What's the point in bumping a 3.5 year old thread? :)
