EEDI vs NNEDI

I'm wondering if someone can explain the difference between EEDI2 and NNEDI. For example, is one of them slower because it's higher quality? Or does one of them work smarter, not harder, saving time?

At the time they were being developed, I was still in The Matrix of video ignorance. Now, the threads on those filters have a dozen pages, so it would be pretty extreme to study them, which contain old posts that may or may not contain outdated information. And searching for "EEDI vs NNEDI" gives the following:

I find it source dependent.

I find usually NNEDI2 is better than NNEDI, but both are usually better than EEDI or EEDI2 in terms of quality.

But even on the same source, some frames might be better, some worse. Bottom line: try it out yourself on specific source

As for the mechanics on how they work...I have no clue :)

The algorithm is the same. NNEDI(2) does vertical doubling by taking the original picture as one field and then interpolating the "missing" field.
Do this once, turn the result left by 90°, double the vertical size again and finally turn it 90° right. This way the picture has been upscaled by 2x.
In NEEDI2 there even is a function that can upscale the picture by any power of 2 in one single step.

Yeah, TDeint fails miserably with really high motion stuff I've seen - concerts, operas, and adult content seem to be the biggest offendors. It's definitely fixable with NNEDI (and maybe TMM) but gets very slow at that point.

I've found YADIFMod+NNEDI/NNEDI2 to be an excellent middle ground!


CUDA ain't that bad either! And it's free (in terms of CPU time)
