View Full Version : Problems with Star Trek 2009

I would like to backup my Star Trek DVD and make a working copy but find it shows some 43 GB (!) of files on a "normal" DVD9.

I was able to use DVDFab5 to extract the main movie only, but this fails when applied to the whole DVD (as does DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper).

Also with the main movie, the AV sync is slightly off, though +50 ms Audio Skew Correction makes it tolerable.

Any clues...??

TIA

Hi!

Sounds like it uses the same/similar copy protection as Paramount's other recent release, "Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen".

Read the thread about "Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen" a bit earlier on this page.

Unfortunately no.

I tried the latest DVDFab 6.1.2.5 released just 2 days ago and it also failed to rip the whole disc. It can't see past the 43GB BS..

The movie when ripped produces files identical to those using Fab DVD5 (except for the two little 6144 bytes files which contain FAB DVD IDs)

Other comments please..

TIA

"Startrek 2009" is not scheduled for release in the U.S. until November 17th. When was it released "Down Under" (Australia, I presume)?

1) I wasn't suggesting that the SPECIFICS of the copy protection would be IDENTICAL, just that the TYPE of copy protection (apparently some version of "XProtect") is likely the same.

2) Are you using the free version of DVDFab ("DVDFabHD Decrypter") or a purchased version of DVDFab ("DVDFab Gold", "DVDFab Platinum", etc.)? I ask because the publisher has specifically stated that the free version will NOT process the most recent copy protection schemes until 30-60 days after such capability has been available for the purchased versions.

AnyDVD is supposed to work with that title, says here (haven't tried it myself):

Cool, only telling what I found..

That's interesting, didn't know that.

Anyway, thanx for your help.

Is it true ?
I've using free version.
I've reported the problem and confirmed to fix many times, but there seems not to be no distinguish between free and purchased version.

Do you have the link on the DVDFab site for this statement, or can you tell me when I can find it?

Thanx

I guess you didn't carefully read the other thread I mentioned in my first post to this thread.

@JimmyBarnes

You could try using (presently free) "MakeMKV" to make a movie-only .MKV...

@JimmyBarnes

...or.... You could try using (for 21 days free) "AnyDVD" to make a copy.
Since we strangely haven't received any complaints about this movie, that should indicate it works with AnyDVD.

EDIT: and please, if you do choose to try it, let me know the result. I'd really like to know the status of that disc.

Have you had any other DVD9 where the disc apparently shows much higher content e.g. 43GB (the file allocation table appears to show multiple copies of the same files, over and over again), which AnyDVD has been able to deal with successfully?

Yes, there are a couple of protections that do that. Windows will show an invalid file table with the file sizes all out of whack. AnyDVD has been able to take care of that protection on many discs. Give it a try on this one and see if it works for you.

Seems to:

AnyDVD 6.5.9.5 trial gave this report:

"Media is a DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 1743760 sectors (3405 MBytes)
Total size: 3479936 sectors (6796 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: STAR_TREK_XI_AU
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: PAL
Media is locked to region(s): 4!

Found & removed structural copy protection!
Found & removed invalid cell pieces!
Found & removed bogus title set(s)!
RCE protection not found.
UDF filesystem patched!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 10 potential bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 4!"

Hmmm... tricky little bugger. It reduced the chaotic 43GB and multiple filesets to a single coherent fileset of some 7GB, which with one can do normal operations.

Yup, that's the beauty of AnyDVD and the awesome simplicity of using it. I'm glad it worked out for you. Thanks for posting that!

P.S. If you visit the Slysoft forum you'll find 6.5.9.6 is out. Also, not sure what you're using to process the disc, but, it might be best to use AnyDVD's "rip to hard drive" function if you're not using CloneDVD.

Is there still a way to use the files once you put them on your harddrive? I mean from +/- 40 gig to a DVD-5

SamuriHL
10th November 2009, 16:01
The files aren't really 40 gig. The directory info is corrupted so Windows can't see the true file sizes. It's a normal size DVD-9 and can be compressed to DVD-5 once it's ripped to the hard drive using your favorite compression program.

Hi!

MakeMKV readily and properly processed "Star Trek" without any difficulty.

Review of what was processed indicates that the 21st Title ("Title 20 in MakeMKV, since it starts with "Title 0") contains the full and properly sequenced video.

This information should be usable with the freeware version of DVDFab as well , by setting "PathPlayer" to "Off" , selecting "Movie only" and choosing "Title 21"...

It seems that the FREE v.6.2.0.5, with "PathPlayer" set to "Always ON" will do a proper Full Disc copy...

BTW - The BluRay version contains ONLY AACS protection (No BD+)

Did you get MakeMKV to work with the Blu Ray Star Trek? I've found limited success key wise.

Hey Setarip,

Can you clarify if I'm using MakeMKV correctly? I've got it going on Star Trek blu-ray, and it says "The Volume Key is Unknown for this Disc". I've tried to use AACSKEYS.exe and it couldn't find the volume key. I've also tried it with Ghostbusters blu-ray to the same result. Any suggestions? Think Daemon tools or anydvd could screw it up?

Thanks

@Exiton

1) There is absolutely NO reason to use AnyDVD or DaemonTools with MakeMKV. Use the original disc and MakeMKV, by itself, will eliminate the AACS encryption (and now, the BD+ additional protection of many other BluRay discs) and convert the files of your choice to MKV.

2) I've never seen such a message - and definitely not for "Star Trek". It's likely due to your use of DaemonTools, rather than using the original disc directly with MakeMKV

Exiton

@setarip_old

It worked with the actual disc (Thanks!), but when trying to use it on an ISO I get the message about an error reading the AACS VID and the drive certificate might be revoked. Weird since AnyDVD would handle the ISO perfectly. Still, glad MakeMKV is around!

setarip_old

BTW - Although there's no need to create an .ISO, MakeMKV usually deals with an .ISO that's NOT mounted...

guys, pls help with my urgent situation.

i ripped star trek successfully using anydvd. (the option i chose was rip to image). whilte watching, it just closed all of a sudden. now, my mounted isos don't work NOR does the actual disc. In powerdvd 8, it says there is an unsupported disc.

i think this was caused by bd live. the small print on the back of star trek blu ray says, while conneted to the internet, it will gather info about your blu ray player etc.

PLEASE HELP
