View Full Version : How to achieve the maximum bit rate in variable bit rate mode ?

Hii folks.. :)
I’m a newbie 4 ripping.
I use [spam reference removed] (I prefer blu ray rips) to convert blu ray disc movies to a more convenient rip such that it can be stored in my computer hard disc.
Can u suggest any other better HD ripping softwares (Hopefully a freeware one)?
Coming to the point, I set video bitrate around 5mbps or so..(source is about 11 mbps)
When I convert them in variable bit rate mode (vbr is default 4 [spam]). After converting them if I check its specifications, the over all bit rate is abt 5mbps & max bitrate is abt 5.3mbps.
Can anyone suggest a method (or a new converter) so that I can get an increased max.bit rate (like 7 mbps or so) ?
P.S: There is no option 4 setting max video bit rate in my converter.
Thanks in advance :)

Don't ever use payware or "all-in-one" solutions made by sketchy companies, as they are inevitably junk and more often than not rip off code from ffmpeg or x264. Read the x264 documentation and then pick a GUI that suits your needs and interests.

Dude, can u suggest one of them which has bitrate varying setting. I've already downloaded AVCHDCoder & make Mkv etc.. but none of hem have bitrate option ( I mean they give size varying option which alters the bitrate and i want to do the vice versa
Plz check this link :http://forum.videohelp.com/topic147024.html
Some guy(mrj 03) in that link is talking abt the "settings". I want to do the same kind of thing. Keep Min.bitrate & max.bitrate..But i don't find any converter which can help me to do that. Can any one tell me in which converter that kind of option is available??
Needed help desperately

EVERY x264 front-end can set bitrate, peak bitrate, buffer size, etc. You need to take some responsibility for yourself and read the documentation of x264 and various encoder front-ends rather than relying on hand-holding. People are frankly way too busy for that, and if you won't do your research, video encoding is not for you.

There are tons of GUI's out there.
For a really simple solution that will do what you want very well - I'd suggest looking at ripbot264
Now - why do you want to change the max bitrate?
1) If you're just ripping your BluRay discs to your PC, and watching them there, why worry about bitrate at all? CRF encoding mode is great for this purpose
2) If you're ripping to watch on your PC, but want to burn the rip on a DVD5 or DVD9, you can just use 2 pass unrestricted VBR. No need to set a peak bitrate / VBV.
3) If you're ripping to watch on a hardware device - then there's actually a valid need to setup a VBV and thus limit the peak bitrate.
What are you doing?

Firstly,Thanks for sparing some time buddy :)
I'm ripping blu rays to my PC whether my purpose is to watch it on my pc or to burn them to DVD, 4 me clarity of the video is important.
If i set the bitrate @ 2.5Mbps the size is around 3 g.b and yet the I'm getting some blur effects ( not exactly blur but more like some blocks ) in dark & more graphic/action scenes. So i'm thinking that if i can set a more max.bitrate then i can get rid of such undesirable effects in my videos.. Isn't it? :)

ok im new too but im going to take a stab here, if you are seeing artifacts during high motion scenes you may want to try turning up your motion estimation range. 2.5 mbps should be plenty of bitrate, i highly doubt that is your problem. also my purpose in dvd ripping is similar to yours i use dvddecrypter, to make my vob then i use dgindex to index and demux my vob, then i use megui and its toolset for encoding muxing and avs editing. i use matroska for my container because it provides more functionality than i can ever imagine needing, x264, and LAME, i use to encode video and audio respectively.
as for the blocking in dark low motion scenes, im really not sure, one thing you can try is turning your deblocking up, i wouldnt set it higher than 2 / 2 though, i hope someone else has the answer to this question because im curious
it seems people easily forget how mind boggling this task is to a newbie, it took me a few weeks before i could even read the language "official documentation" is written in

If you're trying to keep your BluRay disc at 1080p, and encode at 2.5mbps you won't get very good results with most titles :) That's a ~ 10x reduction! I wouldn't go lower than 5mbps for 1080p in almost any case!
Do you care about the final file size?
Do you burn your backups to a DVD5 or DVD9, or do you just archive on a hard drive? It sounds like you burn your backups, so I'd suggest filling whatever media you target with one movie. In other words, one movie gets a full DVD5 or DVD9. Set the average bitrate accordingly. No need to set a VBV (max bitrate), just let x264 do its thing.
If you're backing up to hard drive, just set a CRF number you're happy with, and don't worry about a bitrate.

2.5mbps is not plenty, it is just k 4 HD rips.. Itz plenty 4 dvd rips :)
U r talking about some turning deblocking up.. As i've mentioned that i'm a total newbie :D can u give some link to some good tips for beginners or any guide like things.. & vatz this x264 documentation.. where can i find this documentation?

I'm trying to keep them at 720p.
Yes, i care about final file size.. if not, i would have kept the bitrate around 8mbps or so & then i need not worry about changing max.bitrate settings etc etc..
I'm trying to save them to my Hard Disc.. & vatz this crf number. At first i thought u r talking about CBR but after reading this post it seems to be something else :D
