Hi,

I'm recording DVB streams and I would like to burn some of them as a DVD. It shouldn't be a problem because they are MPEG-2 SD and I'm also using ProjectX and PvaStrumento to clean them up and to ensure A/V sync. But both tools are warning me about some GOP's being larger than 15 which is not DVD compliant, however they don't have an option to change the size of the GOP's.

So my newbie question: is it possible to change the size of the GOP's without reencoding ? And if so what is the right tool to use ?

VideoReDo claims to change GOP size without full re-encoding, specifically to make DVB streams DVD compliant.

I have the TV suite version, though this feature might be in the standard version too.

I used to use VRD to make my analog TiVo recordings DVD compliant--just set to 15 and go. Very fast. They have a 2 week free trial upon registering your email with them.

It finds the >15 GOPs and re-builds them (re-encodes, I guess) but I never saw any negative visual impact from doing so.

Cuttermaran (which happens to be free) also has an option to make DVD compliant streams by just reencoding the offending GOPs. You can find this setting under Actions -> Settings -> Encoding

Check first if your DVD player accepts longer GOPs, if you really really want ot avoid even smart reencoding.

Most players accept a longer GOP, say up to 25, I dunno about UK DVB-T (there are reports about some broadcasters that use a GOP of 45). It's all how the frames are internally processed (onboard memory, algorithms etc.).
