I tried burning a DVD to a Verbatim DVD+R DL disk twice now. It plays fine on a computer, but on my JVC XV-S502 standalone player it shows no disk. The second time I made sure I changed the book type to DVD ROM. This is not a "end of world" type problem as I have a HTPC hooked up also that would play them back, but it bugs me as the damn player plays the factory DVD9 but not mine!! Any ideas?

That could be alot fo factors

which program are you using for backup?
which software are you using to burn it?
does your dvd standalone players read backup disc other than what you are trying?

According to the DVD player list at VideoHelp.com, the JVC XV-S502 does not support DL discs.

Store bought DVD9 discs are pressed, not burnt. They can't be compared to the DVD9 discs you burn yourself.

There are many DVD players that have problems with DL discs. Some will play them fine, others will hang or pause at the layer break, and some will not even recognize DL discs.

Thanks Video Dude, I thought that would be the answer. And it explained what the difference is. I think the whole "it plays factory, so why not mine" thing is what made me crazy.

I have the same problem.

On my old XBOX, some old Verbatim DL discs played fine, the new lot not (they have a different cover too). Tried both + and -. But my fairly modern DVD players play them.

Undortunately, the old lot has evaporized from the stores a year ago.
