View Full Version : Can't edit Rebuilder.INI file Vista Ultimate X64

I have DVD-RB pro installed on Vista Ultimate x64, and I am trying to edit HCTargetSectors in the rebuilder.ini file, as I have done in the past with Vista Home Premium x32.
There are 2 "programs files" folders shown in the C: drive, with DVD-RB PRO residing in the folder titled: Program Files (x86)
When I type in HCTargetSectors=2251930 (as I have set in the past on my x32 system), note pad reports that it can not create the .ini file, and to make sure the path and file name are correct.
I have also observed that the .ini file does not reflect the settings that I have set in the rebuilder GUI.
(E.g. I have hc quality/speed set to best in the GUI, but it appears as HC_Quality=1 in the .ini file, rather than =3as it should be.)
Is there another .ini file hidden in the other "programs files" folder (that I presume to be x64 programs), that I am over looking?
Please forgive me if this has been answered before, but I have been unable to find an answer, searching the forum.
If someone can direct me to a thread addressing this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
sockeye

Under some situations in vista/7 the rebuilder.ini used will be in documents and settings. Have you tried searching C: for rebuilder.ini?

Thanks for replying turbojet. I have done a thorough search of the C: drive using the advanced, and search files method. The only rebuilder.ini file found, is the one residing in the program files (x86) folder, which does not reflect the settings I have set in the GUI, and will not allow me to edit the settings.

In Vista you need Admin rights to write anything to the program files folder. So in order to edit the file you have to open notepad with admin rights, then it may write and edit in the program files folder.

Thanks for replying Rumbah, I was just returning to post, that I have found a solution my problems.
Uninstalling DVD-RB and reinstalling took care of the issue of the .INI not reflecting the settings set in rebuilders GUI, however, I was still unable to edit the .ini, even though I was logged on as "an" administrator. This method has served me well with Vista Home Premium, however, I have just installed a new OS, (Ultimate) on my system. I found with some research, that Vista Ultimate, by default, does not grant full administrative privledges to the administrator account that is set up during install.
There are additional snapin settings in Ultimate that are a part of Vista's UAC, that need to be changed for full administrative privledge. (Disalbling UAC did not work either.)
This snapin is not included in Vista Home Premium.
I am now able to edit the .ini and save changes, logged on as administrator.
This (http://www.walkernews.net/2007/11/09/how-to-enable-vista-ultimate-administrator-account/) was helpful to me in navigating the snapin, so I will post it for anyone else, having similar problems. This article was from 2007, and based on the the first release, so I found some slight differences with SP2.

Without changing the system you could just rightclick the editor exe or shortcut and select Run as administrator. Then only the program has elevated rights and can edit the file for just this one time.

Thanks Rumbah, I will try that. A bit off topic, but in the course of uninstall and reinstall, the option to install rebuilder for all users did not appear, when I reinstalled it to the administrator account. Do you know of a way to make it available to all users, short of installiing for each one?
TIA
