pc --> VGA --> laptop?

Hi

I need to capture video of one computer, with another laptop computer. All I can connect in the source computer, is the VGA. I wondered if anyone has experience with this.

I thought of using KD-VTCA3 VGA to Component Video Adapter (http://www.digitalconnection.com/Products/Video/kdvtca3.asp). But what could i use at the laptop for capturing the components?

and, would it work? could I get nice HD at the laptop without quality loss?

Once the signal is converted you'll inherently have a "loss".
This is valid not only for digital->analog but also for digital->digital (change of codec, colour space, size etc.) and for analog->analog (colour space, size etc.).

The most elegant solution would be to redirect the software video output to a file (use graphedit), I mean on the same computer, but it's not always possible.

If you can capture using a screen capture program, that would be my suggestion. This is much easier than doing a D->A->D conversion like the last poster mentioned.

If you have no other way of capturing video, you can probably use a VGA to component adapter, and a component video capture card. The only one that I know of that would work with a laptop would be the BlackMagic Video Recorder, which is USB based. This has hardware H.264 compression, and can't capture 1080p60, so you're going to get 1080p30 at the best.

This sounds like a big PITA project ;)

Hi!

Sounds to me like you're talking about TRANSFERRING already-captured data from your "source computer" to your laptop, rather than CAPTURING from your "source computer" to your laptop .

If so, I'd suggest you purchase an external hard drive...

Hi and thanks all! actually i cannot use a screen capture since I dont have access to the source computer, only to its VGA cable.

i am thinking about Black Magic's USB Video recorder. seems this and Hauppauge box are the only available USB video capturers in the market these days

but - does anyone know if Black Magic's USB Video recorder or Hauppauge present the capture on the recipient machine in real time? best if it's available as a virtual camera... then I can use many mixing programs in real time.
