i have loaded an avi into virtualdub, i wish to increase the volume as when i playback the video the audio is very low.

however after loading the avi, if i go to the audio pull down menu the volume settings are unselectable!

can this be countered? is it something to do with the fact that when i load the avi i get a message saying "variable bit rate audio detected"

Hi!

To increase volume of an already created .AVI:

Load it into VirtualDub (or one of its variants).
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying".
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode".

Under the "Audio" tab, select "Compression" - Put a checkmark next to "Show all formats". Select the same format, frequency, and sampling rate (e.g. MPEG3, 44,100Hz, 128Kbps) as the original .AVI.

Under the "Audio" tab, select "Volume" and increase to the desired percentage.

Save with a new filename.

Hi.
Or you can use mp3dc to increase the volume of the mp3 without recode, so no quality loss.

i'll try mp3gain or mp3dc and see how that fairs. i had tried aetting video direct stream and audio full processing but the file size was almost double the size of the original

@paoloi had tried aetting video direct stream and audio full processing but the file size was almost double the size of the originalIf you're referring to my suggestion to use VirtualDub, I'd suggest you check carefully to make CERTAIN you've set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"...

It seems it's your audio which has been saved in wav....not in 'compressed'...
Setarip_old's first post is a good explanation. Do it again exactly as he said.

@setarip_old

yes i had tried what you had suggested before posting my original question and as i said the file ended up being nearly double the size of the original.

i think it may have something to do with the fact the original avi has a variable bitrate and virtual dub is trying to convert the audio to a constant bitrate.

if i go to compression and check the compression box and select a format etc i get a window saying
"error initializing audio stream compression
the audio codec cannot compress the source audio to the desired format.
check the sampling rate and number of channels in the source is compatible with the selected compressed audio format."

neither mp3gain or mp3dc proved to be of any use

@paolo78

What is the content of the AVI and where did you get it?

i download music videos from itunes but as i cannot view them on my ps3 i have to remove the drm - which i do using a programme called tunebite. tunebite removes the drm and i dump the music videos on to a portable drive and watch on my tv through my ps3.
occasionally the videos downloaded off itunes are louder than others so when i skip from one video to the next i have to alter the volume. its not a big deal out of nearly 200 videos about 10 - 15 have volume issues, just means i'm not searching for the tv remote control to lower the volume every now and then!

Hi, have u adjust the volume before converting the files with tunebite? U can set the volume for all your files to a level and then start tunebite to convert. In this way tunebite rerecords the files with the volume u selected.
Hope this helps you. :D
