View Full Version : Is this Interlaced, Telecined or Phase-Shifted PAL?

I shot some footage with my Samsung DVD Cam, which I need to transfer to my PC, edit and create a PAL DVD from the edited material.

Granted, the Samsung is not the best in the world, but it is sufficient for my needs. However, I'm having problems in creating an error free DVD. Some footage has bad flickering/lines, whatever it is called. It looks like the first screenshot on this post of mine

The steps I took for the final DVD were

1) Opened the VOB files in VirtualDub and saved as uncompressed AVI.
2) Edited the AVI files in Sony Vegas and exported as MPG & AC3 files.
3) Authored the DVD with Sony DVD Architect Pro, using the exported files.

I'm not sure if DVD Architect don't author it correctly, or whether I missed a required step somewhere.

I've uploaded a sample created with DGIndex from the original Cam disc, and I hope someone can tell me whether the footage is Interlaced, Telecined or Phase-Shifted.

I've also uploaded a corresponding sample with DGIndex from the final DVD disc. Maybe someone can tell whether there is a difference between the two (apart from being shorter than the original).

Maybe there are better tools to use?

Thanks in advance :)

It's pure interlaced video.

Are you trying to make an interlaced DVD?

Tell us your script and encoder settings.

I was led to believe that it is best to create an interlaced DVD, especially for playback on TV.

I'm not using any scripts, as the VOB files are opened directly with VirtualDub and exported as an uncompressed AVI. In Sony Vegas the encoder settings are as per the screen shots below

I assume these are the settings, as I'm using the VASST DVD Prep plugin which outputs the video and audio files for DVD Architect.

You created an interlaced DVD so of course it will have interlacing. So what is the problem?

I was hoping that there is a way to create a DVD which doesn't have the flickering, etc when played on a TV. Not all the footage has this problem, only some parts.

You got the field order wrong. You encoded TFF material as BFF.

Thank you!

I've just played the original cam disc on my DVD player, and the picture on the TV is fine. I guess the Sony Vegas preset is not correct for my purposes. At least I know now to check the original footage specs before editing and encoding.

Here I go again, creating the DVD for the 3rd time :)
