Has anyone done any in-depth testing to compare the Playstation 3 hardware de-interlacing of PlayStation 1 games compared to de-interlacing of same source done with avisynth based methods?

i'm thinking the PS3 just uses fast edge-directed interpolation.

I've tested it with PS2 games that support native 480p, and the PS3 version is quite poor in comparison. As for PS1 games, they don't look too bad. Even though you are not sure, how does what you outlined compare to modern avisynth based methods?

Anyone else have thoughts?

Ive been capturing 720p upscaled footage and scaling it back down to its native resolution on the PS3 (PS1 games). The results are very well in my opinion. I'll post some capture shots tomorrow from some games. Its all from HDMI and done to a lossless codec. Its easily the best quality I've seen and I see no artifacts.

I also have captured some Playstation 2 game footage in the same manner. It also looks quite good. Heres some Youtube footage if that helps:

I don't know if things have been fixed since then but I tried playing a PAL PS1 game on a PS3 about a year or so ago and at 1080p it did not deinterlace it at all :(
It was Tekken 3 (which runs at 50fps on the PAL version), and it was all upscaled horrible combing. I'd say the majority of PS1 games ran at 25/30fps (PAL/NTSC) or less so deinterlacing is less of a concern with these. I don't have a PS3 myself so can't try again.

Yeah, update to newest firmware and give it a try.
I found the playstaion 1 games that I work with to look damn good in 480p mode.
PS1 games ran anywhere from 320x240 to 640x480 all interlaced.
Also, even if the original game was say 320x240, ps3 will always scale it to at least 720x480.

Never tried upscaling then downscaling for ps1 games (or ps2 for that matter). I'll have to try it and see how it looks.

I don't agree with you that ps2 games would look good with this process. If the game has native 480p support, then it would be far better to capture the native 480p.
PS3 will always upscale the 480i version of the game, even if that game has native 480p. If it upscaled the native 480p version, it would look much better imo.

Yeah, obviously 480p native games will look better. But thats just not an option on many PS2 games :P
