Can't get OSD on my new JVC HR-S9400

Hi,

today I finally got my hand on a S-VHS VCR, an upgrade in my capturing rig. It's an JVC HR-S9400 connected via s-video to my TBC and then to a capture card.

The damn thing plays tapes just fine, and I can watch the picture on my monitor. However, I can't see any OSD whatsoever nor can I call up the menu system. I have tried the SCART out aswell, but still no luck.

...then... why? What should I do?

Tried some more. The VCR can't output any own signal at all, no menu. No OSD. And... no blue backround when the tape's not running. When I press stop the signal disappear totally to the TBC.

It's like it's in superimpose-mode, but harder. :(

Are there any way to do a factory reset on the JVCs?

Usually, the output labelled TV should output the image + the OSD while the others may output the image without any OSD at all (you don't want to have PLAY SP 1:23:56 23:12 02.08.2009 or FFWD or REW on your screen, do you?, I mean to have it for good inscripted in your DVDs).

The european version of the 9400 looks a bit different than your image, the remote aswell. The VU-meters are vertical, not horizontal for instance.

I have tried all outputs except the RF, still no luck. I've been in contact with JVC and according to them it's not possible to disable the main menu so they're suggesting that my unit's faulty. :(

Maybe, just maybe ...

If your unit was bought off eBay, it might be very well the case that it was used for capturing VHS tapes. If the OSD cannot be switched off, then it follows that the pre-owner had somehow cut the OSD output before reaching the video mixer. I'm not sure how or if you can do this, on profi gear you simply unplug a card/connector (but usually it's not needed since they have separate outputs - with and without OSD).

Once again, it's a supposition, because if a unit features OSD then it has to show it somehow to the operator (that's the purpose of an OSD).

Resseting can be done by taking out the backup battery (I think it's soldered) or by taking the unit completely off power for some days (supercaps), weeks (akku) bzw. years (battery).

I have a JVC HR-S7000EG I bought on eBay a while ago and it does the same as you describe. I never had the manual and the VFD displays everything that is needed, so I just assumed it has no OSD. However, yours is a much newer model (mine is from ca. 1996) so it does a bit strange to not have an OSD

Today, all of a sudden, the OSD/menu works. :) A loose wire or something I guess.

Anyhow, now I've been able to put the player in edit-mode, so now I don't need the menus more. :)
