Hi all. I've been successfully backing up DVDs for years. Typially I've used Plextor drives in the past, though I am currently stuck with a Dell 420 XPS and whatever that comes with by default (it has no Blu-ray). I never touch Blu-ray, only normal DVDs.
I use a mixture of tools depending on what seems relevant at the time, from DVDShrink to AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter, MakeMKV, Alcohol and a few lesser known ones. Never have I had issues.
Currently however I seem to have endless problems copying to HDD. Often I get to 40/60% and then I get cyclic redundancy errors. The drive also spins up and seems to spend an age 'thinking' about what it's doing.
I tried this on my laptop too and with an external drive and seem to get the same issue, now that usually means it 's the disc but this happens with many discs, so the Vista conspiracy theories come out. I imagine it is possible an update could be causing this but even so, I've never struggled to copy a simple DVD before.
What's worse is that from a series, some discs work, whilst others fail.
I either need to try some other software, get a new drive (recommendations welcomed) or ditch my OS. Anyone else struggled like this? Did you fix it?
