codec installation on clean vista install

hello all,

i was wondering if any one can offer any suggestions on what codec one should install for the optimal playback experience.

i have in the pass installed divx, xvid, realalternative, quicktimealternative, ac3filter, divx 3.11, coreavc and some others to get most if not all the media files i have to play properly.

i tried ffdshow briefly but it caused conflicts and i got confused and never tried it again. would using ffdshow/coreavc/mphc be the best solution? or should i go back to installing a number of separate codec and if so, which ones do i really need?

At a minimum, I've found that ffdshow-tryouts plus Haali's Media Splitter handle virtually all content correctly. In addition:
- I like MPC-HC for its DXVA decoders and renderer config options (I don't use shaders, but many people like them).
- Quicktime Alternative or QT Lite will occasionally handle older Quicktime files better than the Haali/ffdshow combination
- I haven't yet found a use for Real Alternative. Maybe others have.
- Installing ffdshow eliminates the need to install Divx or Xvid or AC3filter for decoding
- CoreAVC is fast (and, uniquely among DS filters, I believe, uses CUDA). So is Divx 7's decoder. So is ffmpeg-mt in ffdshow tryouts. So (with a recent GPU) is the MPC-HC DXVA filter.
- Avisynth is worth installing if you need to pull any obscure filters into your playback chain.

i didnt know there was a ffdshow-tryouts
now to only figure out how to only use ffdshow-tryouts as a fallback if i dont have any other codec that could handle the video
