View Full Version : MPC-HC won't play 24-bit samples?

I have a number of drum wav samples, the 16-bit ones play fine but the 24-bit ones don't (I get the "cannot render file/audio switcher:: out" message). What do I do to make MPC-HC play 24-bit wav samples?

This has been bugging me for months. Any help is much appreciated!

only thing that comes to mind... does the sound card you use support 24-bit resolution audio? And what are you decoding the audio with? FFDshow?

you could try enabling the built-in audio switcher.

Thanks for both your replies, I really appreciate it.

My audio card is M-Audio 2496, which should support 24-bit audio AFAIK.

MPC-HC's built-in audio switcher is already enabled.

And yes, I have ffdshow installed. Perhaps there is something in ffdshow I need to adjust, but I must confess ffdshow confuses me a bit with it's infinitude of options :)

(I should add that foobar2000 plays these 24-bit samples just fine!)

Any suggestions??

open ffdshow audio>output>check 24 bit interger

Thanks a lot Shiloto! I excitedly ran and ticked "24-bit" in ffdshow's Audio Decoder / Output ... but that didn't work either!? :(

Can anyone help me out please? I need to find out why my MPC-HC (latest build) doesn't play 24-bit wavs!??

Thanks for taking your time to look at this, Tetsuo55!

http://sharebee.com/92f36d61

It is a ~1MB wav sample (kick drum). I have hundreds of drum samples I need to trawl through, some are 16-bit, some are 24-bit (like this one here). The 24-bit samples don't play.

As expected it works fine on my system:

Here is a screen of the filters, do yours look the same?

We must keep trying to find the cause of the problem but you should probable be using a dedicated audio player for these samples, like foobar2000.

Thanks Tetsuo55, but I'm not sure what I'm meant to look at in that screenshot you provided? I can't access the Play/Filters option because the file is not loading to begin with.

I uninstalled ffdshow to see if that was causing problems - still won't play.

I think I'll just take your advice and make foobar2000 my dedicated audio player.

Thanks all the same! Also thanks Tetsuo55 for MPC-HC, and providing your SVN build list for us all!

The file contains uncompressed audio, so no audio decoder will come into play. If you can't play it, it means your audio renderer won't accept 24-bit input. If you are sure you audio card should support it, then look in the driver settings, because you may need to enable some options there to allow 24bit input.

A workaround would be to enable "Uncompressed" in ffdshow audio decoder. Also disable 24bit in ffdshow, so that it converts to 16bit. The you can play the file.

My audio card is a M-Audiophile "2496" - IOW I assume it must allow 24bit input, right? I'll try the ffdshow workaround, thanks for your input Clsid!

Try Reclock as the renderer (in Wasapi or Kernel Streaming mode), and set it to output 32bit integer (or float...or try 24bit...whatever works).

I would not set ffdshow to 16 bit if you can avoid it - that defeats the purpose of 24bit audio in the first place.

Well, it's strange, I uninstalled EVERYTHING (MPC-HC, ffdshow, even the haali splitter) then reinstalled MPC-HC by itself. Still doesn't play 24-bit wavs! So then I install ffdshow, everything at default EXCEPT I enable "uncompressed" audio and checked all the bit-rates (16,24, 32)... NOW it plays just fine!?

So although everything seems fine now, I'm still left wondering why MPC-HC wouldn't play these uncompressed wav samples without ffdshow?

Anyway, thanks everyone for the input. Foobar2000 is fantastic for converting audio etc, but I love MPC-HC as an all-purpose media player, it's slick!

I have already answered that before. Your audio renderer does not accept 24bit input.

By checking all output formats in ffdshow you basically tell ffdshow to decide which one it should output. It will pick the highest one that is accepted by the audio renderer.

What audio renderer are you using Yobbo?

You really should be using Reclock set to WASAPI.
