Hi there, I know there've been a few threads about this around here, but no solution yet.

So I have the 64bit alpha/beta of the Haali Splitter, aswell as 64bit ffdshow builds (which also has the highest merit and is used above any other codec). The thumbnail extension is set to yes in the haali options, and, obviously I'm using 64bit Windows Explorer. Now shouldn't this work?

Normal playback is fine of course.

No it doesn't work. Haali is thinking about removing this feature all together since many of the problems encountered with the splitter are related to this functionality.

There is solution from DivX that enables thumbnails for mkv on win7. It uses new windows mediafondation thing to make this possible. But it's still beta.
Do not expect thumbnails from Haali, AFAIK this feature was removed from upcoming new version.

You can use Microsoft's own shell extension.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mkv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

Ok, I didn't know about that Haali was removing this.

@clsid I added this key to the registry, but nothing happened, it still doesn't work :(

You might need to disable Haali's shell extension and clear the thumbnail cache.

Hi guys!

i'm using Win7 x64. I tried several methods to generate MKV thumbnail for explorer.

- the registry hack is not working at all
- the thumbnail support in Haali Splitter was removed
- the Divx thumbnailer is very buggy: stops at certain MKVs leaking the whole RAM (due to a bug with specific MKV headers)

Is there a proper way to generate MKV thumbnails?
