New authoring program, Bombono DVD

Hi all!

I've released the public version of my program, Bombono DVD, see here -

Current version: 0.5.1 (some bugfixes and 64bit support)

Bombono DVD is easy to use program for making DVD-Video.
The main features of Bombono DVD are:
* excellent MPEG viewer: Timeline and Monitor
* real WYSIWYG Menu Editor with live thumbnails
* comfortable Drag-N-Drop support
* you can author to folder, make ISO-image or burn directly to DVD
* reauthoring: you can import video from DVD discs.

There are ready repositories for Ubuntu and ALT Linux and the binary for
openSUSE 11.0, for install.

It would be nice if you give me some feedback about it here. :)

I plan Windows version but when I complete animation menus and some other things.
And hey, windows user has TDA, DVDit, Architect and so on,- is there need for another auhtoring program for him?

I have no official DVD specification and no $$ for it (it costs expensive). All we (Open Source) have is reverse-engineered docs by many peoples and realized as dvdauthor & libdvdread package. So, I think, it's too difficult to see features such ... mmm ... multicamera, multistory, seamless playback ...

But good news is that features not needed for most peoples :)))

Does anyone knows a program to convert any video to "DVD preset" flawlessly?
I seek easy way for newbies to get sources ready for my program. What I can suggest now:
1) mencoder & mplex (not easy!)
2) one user tells me about Winff

This looks very promising. Is a template system planned for the menus?

One small thing I noticed was that 352x240 resolution MPEG-2 files were rejected, even though it is actually an acceptable resolution for MPEG-2 on NTSC DVD (I know this both from personal experience, as TMPGEnc DVD Author handles them fine - without reencoding - and the Wikipedia article on DVD-Video (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video#Resolution_and_frame_rate) lists both 352x240 and 352x288 as valid sizes; DVDAuthor's man page also lists them under video-opts).

Still on that subject, the warning dialog that shows when it encounters files with illegal resolutions could use shrinking. If you select multiple files in the File Browser and choose to add them to the Media List it can easily run off the visible screen if more than a certain number get rejected (3 or 4 in my case since I use 1024x768 as my display resolution). Maybe something like a warning that X number of files were rejected, with the Show/Hide option to expose the full readout inside of a scrolling text box. That way the user can always see the Cancel and OK buttons.

1. Yes I plan templates for menus but users want animation, subtitles and other "essentials" first, you see ... as soon as possible.

2. Can you public some 352x240 and 352x288 content? And where one can get it (camcorders?)? I need to check things before making acceptance.

Usually with 352x240 I produce it myself from larger resolution masters (in the case of things I've edited myself, I do 352x240 encodes for posterity and out of habit since I originally would author VCDs), or content that's already at that resolution but not necessarily in MPEG-2 (non-VCD-spec MPEG-1 from enhanced CDs I have, stuff from YouTube or Nico Nico Douga, etc.) rather than gleaning it away from a device that records it that way. It might also be beneficial for VHS->DVD transfers if you want to pack a lot of content on a disc and prefer to keep the vertical resolution close to what it originally was.

Do you need the actual .mpg files themselves or do they need to be authored into a standard DVD structure first?

Edit: The .mpg files themselves. Both NTSC and PAL, a set with 192kbps stereo AC3 and one with 448kbps 5.1 AC3, just to cover the bases there. I used the Big Buck Bunny trailer (http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/trailer-page/) as the source, and the 5.1 files are there just because that was what the trailer itself had (as I used the 1080p version and downscaled it rather than just grabbing the one for the iPhone).

Mmm ... yes, authored DVD will be better.
I dont require much size, about 10mb DVD iso or folder will suit
(authored with TMPGEnc DVD Author for example).

I've released 0.5.2 version. Changes:
* Error "File is not open" fix with read only and >2GB files
* 352x240 and 352x288 MPEG-2 are now accepted
* Close button fix in About dialog
* Error message box about rejected files is not too big now.
