View Full Version : VC-1 decoding: WMP9 or libavcodec in ffdshow?

I'm asking this primarily because I'd like to use BD Rebuilder:
1)
Why should VC-1 decoding be set to WMP9 and not libavcodec in ffdshow? Ist there a difference? Better quality, a speed difference maybe?
2)
I'm using Win7, so a installed H.264 decoder is not needed anymore. Same question here: Would ffdshow's libavcodec be better that Win7's own H.264 decoder (Windows Media Foundation)?
Thanks for any help.

1) libavcodec does not support interlaced vc-1
2) ffdshow decoder is faster and more stable than microsoft h.264 decoder.

Ok, thanks for the info.
But what about quality? Is there a difference between the decoders?
OS is Windows 7.

The wmv9 option is just a wrapper for the Microsoft decoder. So unless you use any of the internal filters of ffdshow, there is no point in using that.

Sorry for replying so late, I was out of town.
OK, you say if I choose WMP9 in fddshow in Win7 32bit then the latest Microsoft VC-1 decoder will be used and not the old WMP9 one? That's great news!
And yes, I'm forced to use ffdshow for VC-1 sources and set it to WMP9. Otherwise BD Rebuilder will not start encoding in Win7. With H.264 it's no problem, those would work even without ffdshow (or set to disabled). But not VC-1 encoded movies... :-(
Does anyone maybe know of a new solution for that annoying VC-1 decoding problem in Win7?
