Should I upscale ?

Hi

Im encoding using MeGUI to h264. My question is this :-

"Should I upscale to 1280x720 during the encoding process or just let the video card do it on playback".

1280x720 is the native resolution of my projector.

Can you see the difference up scaling during encoding as compared to on the fly during playback ?

Interested in your opinions.

No, you should not upscale. It is a waste of bits.

However, if you don't care about size, with some smart filtering, the CPU upscale would look better than your projector's.

Like Chengbin said, smart filtering can help, but usually marginally. There are only a few special cases that look noticeably better. You can also add HD grain, but some people don't like that.

I completely agree with the above two posters. Upscaling has limited advantages and should generally be avoided. The only legitimate time I see to upscale is when whatever device you are targeting doesn't support upscaling/has a crappy upscaling algo.

Thanks for the replies.

I have in fact invested time and effort trying different methods of upscaling, been playing around with it for about 6 months now. The reason I ask here is that having done my test, and to be honest not seeing great rewards, I thought it was time to see what other people are doing.

Seems no one else bothers..... don't think I will either.

I believe there is a place for upscaling...when you can do it better with a script than your playback device can and you are willing to accept the processing time for the (possibly small) quality gain.
