Heya,

My MeGUI seems to have stopped updating with x264 1183 - Jeeb's?

It reports that it has the latest copy, but there's been tons of improvements since that v according to the change log on x264.nl?

Thanks.

Add http://kurtnoise.free.fr/MeGUI/ to your server list, it worked for me.

No, it's over. No suprise in front-end land,
while people posting crash screens on the fly, leaving all your
nice customers in the bare cold, without even a single word, it is an example of the attitude that surrounds this forum, and especially the attitude of the creators of the stuff that people may not say 1 negative word about.

Once again, people get a clue that for serious front-end apps or even h264 encoders, you should better trust programmers that do not "house" here on Doom9.

Thanks, that worked for me too.

I was getting worried about reading all about the new builds and then they wouldn't appear in MeGUI's updater.

ROFL, registered for 2 years and just commented on death of X Y or Z ... what will be next weeks death prediction?!? We wait with baited breath for your indepth insights ...

As for everybody else, how stable and fast are the 1053+ versions that get updated by adding the above URL?!? Will 1053+ updates be added to the old MeGUI update servers, or is it better to download and install 1053 with a clean install to flush any cr#p?!?

Everything is as it was. It's just that the person who updates the main update server is missing (Sharktooth). So if you want to stay up to date, use the above mirror for the time being.

IMHO update features are not worth the trouble, I've removed all of them in my application and since then everything become much easier.

Until a new version of MeGUI is released, I wouldn't go about manually updating x264 and expect MeGUI to do anything useful. For now, stick with the last version 0.3.1.1056 and x264 (1183).

Reason is- x264 has been heavily modified in the last ~135 revisions or so with major functionality changed; they're striving for Blu-Ray compliance. Most of the changes appear to affect anything having to do with b-frames. When the x264 team "calms down" and produces what they see as a stable release, we should at that time expect updates to MeGUI to take advantage of the new functionality.

Trust me, I've looked at every way I know how to modify the jobs so newer editions of x264 can be used, but it simply isn't worth the extra effort right now.

I totally agree

besides, the current state of updates are doing fine so no need to update anything and I think it will suit most people

Most of the changes appear to affect anything having to do with b-frames.There's been only three changes in the past 3 months relating to Blu-ray compliance. MB-tree commits have outnumbered them by about 30 ;)

Also, I don't intend to ever "calm down"

1056 is working flawlessly with latest x264

1. clean installation of latest megui
http://sourceforge.net/projects/megui/

2. install latest avisynth
http://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/files/

3. start megui, but dont update yet.

4. put this in for update server. http://megui.org/auto/

5. update everything except the core, as 1057 breaks megui presets

6. encode

Add http://kurtnoise.free.fr/MeGUI/ to your server list, it worked for me.

I tried that and it totally hosed my install (.56) for some reason. Kept getting tons of errors about my presets XML files and crap. Had to reinstall..

Although thankfully a thread on here got me a working version of x264.exe that would recognize some of the advance settings and preset settings it had previously complained about.

Simple information, but very very useful and needed. I think it's strange something like that post isn't a sticky here.

How about you download a build from x264.nl or the current builds thread on this forum and then just stick it into the correct folder?

That's only because the codec config is currently broken and some of the current options in x264 are not supported. The latter is the least of your problems, since you can always use custom command line options. The former should from memory only be a problem if you are trying to use b-pyramid. This will mainly be a problem if you use the presets that come with megui, since they are from before mb-tree was introduced in x264 and was made the default. The two don't work together and turning mb-tree off is a bad idea since it gives you ten times more quality gain than b-pyramid would.

I wish meGUI would be updated with new presets to reflect the changes in x264... it's a damn shame that this application is in a stand still right now :(
Anyone know of any presets like Sharktooths' but made for the new x264 builds??

From my perspective, having used meGUI from it's conception. It was never intended to be a program used by people who have no knowledge or interest in acquiring a basic knowledge of the command line programs in which it uses. Considering the fact that the problems that exist now as far as I've encountered are all minor syntax discrepencies that can easily be worked around within the confines of the program, if I were a developer and busy with other projects, I would have little motivation in rushing to patch these minor grievances. This board's past posts probably answer 95%+ of the questions asked on a regular basis, its an amazing source of knowledge in the field of video encoding. If you're too lazy to learn the basics, perhaps it's time to migrate to Ripbot264 or Staxrip. Understanding how to create compliant streams for your standalone devices is not rocket science and using the new b-pyramid options in the custom command line options is not heart surgery. Please stop whining.

Like I said in another thread, I've got megui in a state where I can use it with the latest x264 so I'm happy, but you don't release software that deletes presets and causes all sorts of confusion amongst the user base (regardless of their expertise)...especially with no explanation from the developer.

Is there any compelling reasons to try to get MeGUI working with the newer x264 builds? I'm using the 0.3.1.1056 build from Sourceforge with the main update server that isn't being updated anymore and I have a working configuration that generates what I think are good results in an acceptable amount of time.

I've seen talk of using a development update server with 0.3.1.1056 that allows the new x264 builds. I've seen talk of deleting jobs and profiles, getting new profiles, then updating to 0.3.1.1057 and using the development update server. I'm just wondering if it's really worth bothering going through any of that.

Better compression, better quality, faster encoding....

Do we have an official reason why MeGUI no longer updates with x264 builds?

Thanks.

Additionally to what LiFe asked, does anybody know if the MeGUI project is abandoned for good?
