View Full Version : SoundTouch Pitch/Tempo/Rate Question

Even though I've use SoundTouch for quite awhile (by way of BeSweet and/or Belight), I've always been a bit confused by it.

Mostly I use "-r 25000 23976". Everything I've read about SoundTouch's settings claim that that setting is suppose to "Convert frame rate without changing pitch". In my experience it ALWAYS changes the pitch.

For the most part that's fine since it's what I want to do when I make these sort of conversions.

Today I'm actually trying to convert 25fps to 23.976 while REALLY not changing the pitch, and I can't figure out how. (It's for a secondary audio track, so using 25 to 29.97 pulldown on the video isn't an option).

Also, I wouldn't mind understanding the difference between Rate and Tempo. 'Tempo' supposedly doesn't effect pitch, but then again neither is 'Convert Frame Rate', and 'Rate' supposedly does what 'Convert Frame Rate' really does (changing the rate with pitch change).

Anyway, suggestions?

Audio don't have Frame Rate, have Sample Rate and when you change the SampleRate you change also the pitch.

Use Tempo to change the audio duration then the pitch is preserved.
When you play a video (with a fix number of frames) at 23.976 fps have a duration greater than played at 25 fps. Then you need change the audio duration.

Remember, audio don't have FrameRate.

While it is true that audio doesn't have a frame rate, that hasn't prevented SoundTouch from using it as a setting to simplify conversions: http://besweet.notrace.dk/soundtouch.html.

A little trial and error has shown that "-tempo -4.096" is the setting I need. Not that I understand SoundTouch anymore than I did before.
