Is it the same format assuming there is only a audio track containing, can the file extensions simply be renamed?

Is it the same format assuming there is only a audio track containing, can the file extensions simply be renamed?According to the official MPEG-4 ISO 14496 specification, the ".M4A" does not exist. It's purely an Apple creation.
And yes the .M4A file extension can be simply re-named to .MP4....

Thanks, I advocate having different extensions for audio and video files so I'm gonna use M4A.
