Windows 7 x64, what encoder to use?

Hi guys!

I always used CCE with DVD-RB.

Reinstalled computer with windows 7 x64.

No go with CCE install. Complains about HL HASP driver install.

Can you give me any ideas of what encoder you guys think is as good as CCE or close enough? As I write this I am giving HC a shot.....

I think the HASP is CCE's copy protection isn't it? Apparently Windows 7 isn't properly supporting it. No surprise -- lots of things aren't working with Windows 7...

That may apply to applications that run in user space. But applications that install/use their own kernel space driver will require update for obvious reasons.

It appears that the developer's attempt to hide their "copy protection" from the user has caused the problem here once again :rolleyes:

I know this is close enough to be acused for flamethrowing but can someone give their input on what you think could be a good encoder compared to CCE ?

I just tried HC and it seemed ok on the first movie but of course I need to do more testing.

My experience with HC is that the quality is very close to that of CCE, but it runs a bit slower on 2 cores or less. If you have more though, and you run multiple instances of HC (DVD-RB can do that for you) it is actually faster than CCE. I've never tried it in a 64 bit environment.

I am runnning it in an Windows 7 x64 enviroment. It worked like a charm in my first test. the movie Was Narnia Prince Caspian.

In DVDRB I choosed Multiple Encoder Processes (2) is that what you meant by multiple instances?

in HC settings I choosed the Quality Best. When should I consider the other settings? Variable Bitrate, Adjust Luminance Gain, use AVS reload, Use LOSSless etc ?

I am running on a Dell Latitude D830, Intel Centrino Duo 2GHz and 4 gb ram.

Weird, i already encoded tons of discs with win7 x64. Dont remember any complication with installation of CCE, nor unsigned driver problem. Running Win7 x64 RC1 build 7100.

I just installed CCE-SP2 ver. 1.00.01.09 Trial without any problem. I the launched CCE without any problem. Will try tonight with DVD-RB and a Movie.

Perhaps the trial version does not require a HASP.

The installation I used (Trial) Had an greyed out HASP Driver checkbox. So it might be that the HASP is not being installed with Trial then? What is HASP for?

One can wonder about the quality. In both cases (HC and CCE SP2) I got what I think is called flickering in the pciture like unfocused area or bad compression....

Don´t think it is related to windows 7 x64 :)

Don´t think it is related to windows 7 x64 :) If you got it in both, my guess would be that it is in the original too.

If you're having trouble with the HASP driver, perhaps you should check the box for Windows XP compatibility (is there such an option in Windows 7?) before you run the executable. Perhaps then it will initiate like an XP program and give you less headaches.

Personally I would use HCEnc, v0.25 was the last version that apparently fixed a serious bug in v0.24

If you enable multiple instances then HCEnc WILL try and run your system at 100% load, so if you want to actually use your system while its encoding turn OFF multiple instances so that just one thread of HCEnc is running

I found not that much difference in speed, but then again I don't have that sort of system anymore. My old dual core used to max out very easy, this one runs in one thread with plenty of CPU left but is at least 50%-75% faster than my old Q6600 which was at least 50% faster than my old dual core system

HCEnc WILL take over as much as it can regardless how powerful your system is or regardless how many cores it has, if you set multiple instances


I'm also running Win 7 64-bit and AviSynth 2.6.0 with no issues at all with the filters I use sometimes. Some filter insist on newer versions than DVD-RB comes with. Perhaps that may be a minor reason for DVD-RB should be updated with newer vesriosn of software that is installed as defaults.


When you say flickering, is it like green patches or really bad flickering making it unwatchable. This can be down to the original not being ripped correctly or the protection on the original source not being removed correctly

If you use AnyDVD, try updating it to the very latest version. If you are using IMGBurn to rip the disc, it WILL NOT remove any protection, you need to use AnyDVD to strip protection from the source first

i have tired HCEnc, v0.25... it's not good... encode i get pixelet somewhat...

Google "KaMaL MHCE" need to know how he do it... i had dvd9 and i downloaded dvd5 of his... that looks 100% like dvd9 :)

you definitely got something wrong.
HCEnc wont give you pixel soup if your setup is correct.
I use it on an almost daily basis.
And no, I won't load a bollywood torrent to see what others can do :angry::D
