View Full Version : Encoding a NTSC and a PAL DVD To one video file

Hi. This is my first post here. I've been using AviSynth for a while for basic DVD backup, so this is a little advanced for me. I have a Kill Bill Vol.1 PAL DVD and an Vol.2 interlaced NTSC. Out of curiosity i'm trying to encode them to one video file. I've never dealt with framerate changing, so i don't know which sources framerate i should be changing to get them match. Do i deinterlace the NTSC and change it to 25fps or the other way around? Also the resolutions don't match. Cropped PAL is 720x430 and NTSC is 720x358. I'm trying to encode it to 1:1, so no par manipulations. Can anyone help? Sorry for the long post.

The original framerate is 24 fps, so that is the one you should keep the final version at (unless you want to deal with VFR). The PAL audio will need to be resampled back to 48000 kHz after applying a timestretch (also you should use your ears to figure out if the PAL was pitch-shifted or not). For resolution, this is your choice. Do you mean 1:1 PAR by "1:1"? If so, I would suggest 1048x430 for a 1:1 PAR resolution that preserves all the original detail in the PAL source.

I suggest you 992x416. This resolution will keep the dar of the 2 films. (approximately 2.38).

Sorry for my lack of knowlege, but when you say i should keep 24fps does that mean i should keep everything intact? Could you post a little script regarding fps problem?

If you want to keep it a VOB, a pretty fast way is resize the PAL version to 720x480, then use DGPulldown to pulldown to 29.97. You can leave the audio - a real benefit - and you'll have an NTSC DVD compatible file. The downside is you'll get some motion judder that we in the US are accustomed to. Procedure:
1. Demux with DGIndex.
2. Write a script to resize. Can be simply MPEG2Source("Video file.d2v").Spline36Resize(720,480)
3. Encode. HCEncoder will do the job. Don't let it pulldown though; this comes in the next step.
4. Use DGPulldown to convert the M2V to 29.97.
5. Remux the original audio, and your created M2V into a VOB. Then, you should be able to join it with the NTSC version. (I guess the number/format of the audio tracks may be a hangup, but as long as both have the same type / number of tracks, you should be OK.)
The upside to that method is it's less work.
This is just one option; it's your call. If you are used to the judder from converting 23.976 to 29.97, you probably won't notice the difference in the video. But then this is an action movie, so perhaps it would make a difference. Otherwise, you'll have to resample the audio to make the video smoother for a 25fps video. But you'll open up the option to go to H.264, or any format you want.

My suggested procedure is this:
1) Perform inverse telecine to return Vol 2 NTSC to 23.976 fps
2) Do a framerate conversion to return Vol 1 PAL to 23.976 fps
3) Crop and resize both to 1048x430 (or some other resolution)
4) Decrease tempo of Vol 1 PAL audio by 4% to match video
5) Resample Vol 1 PAL audio to 48 kHz
6) Adjoin audio and video of both volumes
7) Encode
