View Full Version : Ripping Problem

I have what appears to me to be a strange problem. I have DVDs I am able to view on different computers, but I am unable to rip them using different software (Smart Ripper or DVD Decrypter).

I'm also unable to copy the DVDs to my hard drive and try to rip them this way.

I would think if I couldn't rip or copy them I would be unable to watch them.

Can anyone provide a solution?

Tell us what happens, what errors or problems you run into. "Unable to rip" tells us nothing.

Hi!

Use a more current DVD ripping program:

(freeware) DVDFabHD Decrypter

or

(commercial) DVD95Copy Pro

Or DvdShrink.

Yes, buy a standalone DVD player; this way you can watch the DVD.

If you want to rip the DVD, I used only DVDshrink, DVDdecrypter and SmartRipper, no problems (I haven't yet used DVDFab or anyDVD because I didn't feel the need for), but you still need to know how to use them for heavy CP disks - read the stickies and/or google for guides.

Or DvdShrink.

If it's as a result of recent protections then DVDShrink is also too out of date.

DVDFab HD Decrypter is therefore currently the best freeware choice.

Never got problems with dvdshrink with old or new dvd. Except one time.

To resume, I used dvdfab 1 time and dvdshrink xxx times.

@Ghitulescu, @MatLz

You have only to read the multitude of threads in the Doom9 "Decrypting" sub-forum (and similar ones elsewhere) over the last three years or so to understand that thereare hundreds of commercial DVDs, with newer copy protection methods, that cannot be properly ripped by DVD Decrypter, SmartRipper, DVD Shrink, and even the excellent RipIt4Me, etc.

Old software will rip all the old discs which is a massive back catalogue.

I've done hundreds of discs in the past with DVD Decrypter. That doesn't mean it isn't out of date either so I'm not sure what your point is there.

None of the old programs cope with ARccOS, Ripguard or any of the other recent structural protections. So the only way of using DVDShrink on these is to have AnyDVD or similar software running in the background.

Try a few recent Sony discs and see how far you get with DVDShrink on its own. ;)

Sorry I wasn't more specific. But there's a reason I'm posting in the "Newbie" thread. I don't really know what information you need.

There are a couple of problems I run into.

1) I get read errors, which seems strange as I'm able to view the entire DVD with software on the same computer I'm trying to rip it on.

2) The I generally get this error. Since i'm a newbie I'll quote it in full. I don't know what information is relevant to an expert.

"I/O error!

Read errors are sometimes due to advanced copy protection schemes. Note they're called "copy protection," not "view protection," since they don't inhibit you from playing the video.

You cannot just copy the files via Windows on ANY mainstream commercial DVD disk without some sort of advanced tool. Even the basic CSS encryption prevents that.

Use DVDFab HD Decrypter (Free), and if you continue to get a CRC error, it's your hardware. Odds are it will rip successfully.

Try one of the more current ripping programs that have been suggested to you in this thread...

There is somewhere a thread/guide about the possibility of ripping Arccos with DVD decrypter. Remember, the OP could watch the DVD on various computers, that means that DVD decrypter in IFO mode could be used, at least for main movie (I don't care about extras, menus etc.). But maybe I'm wrong, and there are indeed titles that are somehow "imune".

DVD Decrypter will rip most disks with advanced copy protections, and will appear to do so successfully, but the files may have issues depending on how they're used.

If you know enough to be able to create your own PSL files then you can rip any disc with DVD Decrypter, extras and all.

I find life much simpler though just using DVDFab.

Whether that makes me lazy or not I'm not sure. :D
