improve quality in x264 video, how?

Are there avs filters which improve quality to x264 video like xvid?

You must specify what 'improve quality' means for you exactly.

Any pre-filtering that you might use with an Xvid encode would still work with x264.

I'm assuming you mean denoising. x264 is much more efficient than Xvid, so you probably won't need to denoise as much.

That's a very generalized statement though :) You must be more specific and / or post a sample for us to give you more useful advice!

What do you mean by improve quality ???
Basicaly, improve quality isn't possible cause the details that arent in the source can't be recreated.
But you may want to increase perceived quality by maybe denoising, deringing, sharpening, dehaloing, or correcting whatever default the source may have.

Or you can try to improve the encoded version in a way they will look better once encoded.
For example, at low bitrate, denoising the source before encoding can do the encoded version to look much better than non denoised one (it's my personal tast, i don't really like grain)

But this isn't related to MPEG4-AVS itsel, avisynth filtering must be discuted in avisynth section of this forum who can give you better informations about it.
Avisynth ins't encoder dependant (even if some filtering work better with certain encoders)
