View Full Version : Trellis 1 or 2 in relation to bitrate

I'm currently on a converting all my Blu-Rays to 720p mkv's marathon, and for the last couple I've tried tweaking a few of the standard Ripbot settings out of curiosity more than anything. Subme from 7 to 9, b-frames and reframes from 3 to 5 each etc. Now, nothing seemed to make too much of a difference to the encode speeds until I tried going from trellis 1 to 2. An hour and half hour film has gone from a just under 6 hour encode on my Phenom II to just over 9 hours.

So my question is - is trellis 2 worth it if I always keep my bitrates between 5000~7000kbps at 720p?

Cheers in advance for any insight.

well trellis 1 means that deathzones will be used sometimes, try trellis 0, they will be used all the time and compare the results.

Cheers for the response, juggaknot. Sorry if I wasn't clear...

Basically, I was just wondering whether trellis 2 was worth the speed decrease over using trellis 1 if I always kept to a minimum of about 5-5500kbps at 720p anyway. I gather trellis 2 is now recommended for preserving detail and grain (which I'm partial to), but do the benefits only really come into play at lower bitrates/file sizes? Eg. would a 5000kbps 720p encode using trellis 1 pretty much equal a 4000kbps encode using trellis 2 in terms of fine detail and grain?

If you want detail and grain use the grain tune and trelis 0

* grain:

Optimize for grainy content: deblock -2:-2, psy-rd 1:0.25, no-dct-decimate, ipratio 1.1, pbratio 1.1, aq-strength 0.5, deadzone-intra 6, deadzone-inter 6, qcomp 0.8

Deathzones might be better for grain than trellis 2 ( no deathzones used ) as the tune says

trellis 1 with deadzone-intra 6, deadzone-inter 6 could be fast and a bit more detail ( trellis is used but not all the time, when its not used deathzones are used but set at 6/6 not 21/11 default )

I've tried to set that on an encode but I can't set psy-rd 1:0.25 in MeGUI witth Trellis 0 as Psy Trellis is greyed out (assuming the 0.25 is for Psy Trellis and the 1 is for Psy RDO)

If I set Trellis to 1 Psy Trellis is selectable, but then deadzones are greyed out and set to the default 21/11 again.

Maybe it's a bug in MeGUI, but I'm not an expert so I settled for Trellis 1 an a grainy 1080p B & W encode and the results are good (to my eyes)

Switching from Trellis 2 to Trellis 1 gives almost 100% speed increase on my quadcore X4 955 AMD Phenom II, quite a shocking difference.

yes trellis 0 = psy-rd 1.0:0.0

deathzones are old so subme 10 + psy-trellis might be a lot better for new movies, it must be tested.

try tune grain --psy-rd 1.0:0.0 --trellis 0/1 and see if the trellis 0 is better or not than the trellis 1 one

is trellis 1 is better than 2 will also be better, --trellis 2 also is needed for subme 10 ( qp-rd )
