Hi minda76,

HC comes with an excellent manual. There you can find everything you need to know about using one of the many built in matrices, and how you can use just about any custom matrix by entering it in your HC.ini file.

Thanks manolito,

But how can i change in rebuilder.ini file and what HC_Matrix=1 does it mean?

1. If you use DVD-Rebuilder Free Version then DVD-RB knows nothing about HC matrices. You have to specify the matrix you want to use in HC.ini (not Rebuilder.ini)

2. If you use DVD-Rebuilder Pro Version then DVD-RB will create a new HC.ini from the settings you made inside the DVD-RB user interface. The matrix you select in DVD-RB will automatically be written into HC.ini. No need to edit Rebuilder.ini manually.

Is it possible to use HCEnc built-in matrices like hvsbest? Cos i can't find them in hc encoder settings and in expert options

I do not own DVD-RB Pro (the free version is all I need :)), but I believe that in the Pro version there is a subfolder under the DVD-RB main folder where all the matrix files are stored. You should be able to create a new matrix file (they are standard text files) with the coefficients of the "HVSBEST" matrix. Then you should be able to select this matrix in DVD-RB.

For more questions about the Pro version you better ask someone who is more familiar with it...

Good luck

That may be something I want to add for the next release.

That is one of the reasons I prefer the free version of DVD-RB. Add the line *MATRIX HVSBEST to your HC.ini and you are done...

manolito:rolleyes: That and the fact that it's free.

There is no comparison between the freeware version and the Pro Version -- especially in terms of features. In fact the basic code isn't even similar anymore. In the pro version you just select the matrix you want from a list that is as large as you want it to be. It will also switch automatically between selected matrices based on resulting bitrate.

It's like the difference between a Ford Focus and a Mercedes. There's nothing wrong with a Focus - but comparing it to a Mercedes just isn't accurate.

Hi jdobbs,
I believe this is not true. Create a new text file in the DVD-RB Pro\Matrix folder and name it "HVS Best.mtx". Open it with Editor and copy & paste the following code into it:

8 16 16 16 17 18 21 24
16 16 16 16 17 19 22 25
16 16 17 18 20 22 25 29
16 16 18 21 24 27 31 36
17 17 20 24 30 35 41 47
18 19 22 27 35 44 54 65
21 22 25 31 41 54 70 88
24 25 29 36 47 65 88 115
18 18 18 18 19 21 23 27
18 18 18 18 19 21 24 29
18 18 19 20 22 24 28 32
18 18 20 24 27 30 35 40
19 19 22 27 33 39 46 53
21 21 24 30 39 50 61 73
23 24 28 35 46 61 79 98
27 29 32 40 53 73 98 129

Save the file. Open DVD-RB Pro. Under Options -> Advanced (Expert) Options -> Quantization Matrices you can now specify the HVS Best matrix for every bitrate you want.

P.S. To verify this I did temporarily install a not so legal version of DVD-RB Pro. This was for testing only, I have already removed it from my machine. Hope you don't mind...:p

manolito I guess I don't know what "is not true". Of course you can do that -- that's pretty much what I said. You can use any matrix under the sun in DVD-RB Pro -- but it is used via the *CUSTOMMATRIX option in the INI and has to be added. What I haven't implemented is the ability to simply choose one of the built-in HC matrices (using the *MATRIX command).

I guess I don't know what "is not true".
Classical case of a slight misunderstanding...:)
minda76 asked: "Is it possible to use HCEnc built-in matrices like hvsbest?"
I answered that he could create a HVSBEST matrix file and tell DVD-RB to use it. A few hours later you answered to minda's question: "Currently not".
Now I thought that you were saying that my advice would not work, so I got curious and made a few tests. I did not realize that you were just saying that you cannot use HC's built-in matrices directly.

Anyways, everything should be clear now... And minda76 now knows how to use the HVSBEST matrix with DVD-RB.

I am receiving an error after trying out the latest Hcenc 0.24:

"Failed to find and run Encoder. Path may be incorrect."

I read in another thread that someone had solved the problem by re-downloading and extracting the file, but this does not work for me.

Yes I do have the DVD RB set to the right program in the right directory. I am running Vista 64bit.
