View Full Version : Recording Compressed vs Uncompressed

If one had a source with the option to record it using exact copy:
Dolby Digital 5.1 (source uses 5 channels as no LFE is present)
or
Two-channel PCM (then upmix to 5.1 yourself)
Which would produce higher dynamic range and overall better quality result? Yes, one is compressed and the other is uncompressed, but which would you think would have the overall clearer and more vibrant dynamic peaks and bass with more impact and slam? I guess it would also depend on the process used to upmix from two channels to multiple channels. On the other hand however, one can never get true 5.1 from two channels.
Any thoughts?

i can't answer until you remove this doubt about DD.
what you really have?
5.1 means 5.1 channels and not "true" 5.1 with isolateds or seperateds instruments or voices in each channel.
you can have mono in all 5.1 channels.

Yes, recording the Dolby Digital 5.1 stream exactly as the source outputs it vs recording a two channel PCM version of the source. Source can be switched to ouput DD 5.1 or Stereo PCM.
The DD 5.1 source, after listening to it, appears to be music in front L/R and rear L/R with sound effects in center channel and no LFE.
When I said "On the other hand however, one can never get true 5.1 from two channels." I was talking about upmixing the two channel PCM version to 5.1.

EAC burn CDs and burning DD in CD will play in your dvd player or is to hear in pc?
in some players work but not all, test it all in cdrw.
if don't work upmix from stereo to DTS to burn in CD.
if your source is stereo PCM and the DD 5.1 source don't have good seperation, better you do your own upmix.
have good guides here in the forum to upmix stereo to 5.1.
burn 1 cd with stereo PCM and other from your upmix.
your own taste is the right direction.

The source is DD5.1 or PCM2.0 it can do/be one or the other.
Yeah, most the guides here are from a a few years back, but I've done stereo to 5.1 upmixs in the past using V.I.
Results seemed to be overall good. I'll have to try a test upmix and compare it to the real Dolby Digital 5.1 version.
You would think the hardware encoded DD5.1 would overall sound better then a software upmix 5.1, but can't say for sure yet.

Have not had a chance to do it yet.
I'll post results when I have them.
Should be a week or so.
